Forums - Gaming - Maybe the recession actually is affecting gaming?

Well, I was thinking about it. How a lot of people are dismissing recession as the reason for any decrease in sales. I think I disagree with that assertion.

I might not be getting the whole picture about the 80's, considering I was four when 1990 turned. Wasn't there a recession (in the US, at least) in the 80's? Is it coincidental that there's the video game crash after the beginning of a recession?

I look at the video game sales for all consoles, even the DS, and I can't help but think that there's still a ways to go downward. Sales year over year have decreased and just recently took a nose dive (metaphorically speaking at least).

So, do any of you think the recesseion argument is nonsense? I'd really like to see sales rebound for all systems and also to receive a slap of sense by some of the more mature members.

Im starting to agaree, but its definitely not the #1 reason it could play a role though

You also forget that last April/May had GTA IV, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit, where as nothing of that magnitude was released at that time this year.

Wii/PC/DS Lite/PSP-2000 owner, shameless Nintendo and AMD fanboy.

Of course it is. Sure, due to their nature and popularity videogames held up well and to an extent still are - but like everything else they take money to buy (unless you're pirating) and money is increasingly tight for most people.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

theres many reasons, but ya the recession is obviosly one of em

This time last year there was a LOT of games being released on all consoles.

This year, not so much.

Although i agree... the recession has something to do with it.

I agree, when making games are very expensive. The developers are having second thoughts in making Unique IPs because it has huge risk and the recession is making it worse.

Gamers also are having second thoughts of buying the game, especially when it comes to new IPs. They tend to not buy it at full price or just rent it or worse they just ignore it and not buy it. A lot of gamers are tightening their wallets.

It should be.....I have not been able to buy a new game in Months..Excluding Gears 2 which intended to buy no matter what...But since Rainbow six Vegas 2 I have not been able to buy a new game...I just got a Job yesterday..and once my drug test results clear I start working...I''m going to buy an HDTV...so no new games till about AUgust or September

Oh, okay. So it is 'obvious' now? There were a few people (I don't have any names, sadly) who have supposed in the past that video games were 'recession-proof'.

I just find it a little ironic, is all. :P

Well..I'm gonna be Honest...At my local Gamestop people are constantly in and out with bags...But you have to factor in used games...While i think the Recession wont affect core gamers..I think most kids are getting less games
