Forums - Sales - The day the PS3 overtakes the XBox 360 in total sales

PS3beats360 said:
According to my past thread that proves PS3 is actually outselling the 360 when we align the two consoles from their launches.

PS3 is ahead of X360 by 3.5 million consoles from launch. PS3 is selling more systems than X360. It is only a matter of time PS3 will overtake X360 when PS3 console price reaches optimal mass market penetration point of $299 and below.

PS3 has sold on average around 120 000 more consoles per month than XBox 360 for first 30 months of their lives on the market. Around 30k more PS3s sold every week than X360. PS3 will well and truly outsell XBox 360 and claim second place in console wars. PS3 outselling X360 by 20% more systems in same point in time comparison.

This is the data which MikeB is referring to. Obviously something in the translation is wrong because according to this the PS1 would have sold 2 billion consoles within the same time frame as the PS3. However, the numbers are likely in "10k units" as if you look at the total and multiply by 10k you get 102 million PS1's. So, according to MikeB the PS3 is tracking 9 million ahead of the PS1, yet the PS1 had 28 million consoles sold at the end of 1997 (same time frame as current PS3 sales at the end of 2008), which shows the PS3 is tracking 8 million behind overall worldwide.

December 31, 1997 -

  2,820 x 10k = 28 million

Where in the world did you get your flawed data, MikeB as even the data from your source proves you wrong.

To expand on this and to further get MikeB's attention:

MikeB said:

The PS3 is currently tracking about 9 million units ahead of the PS1 taking equal timeframes

Equal time frames would be from 1995 to 1997 and 2006 to 2008.

According to the data from MikeB's own link he gave us, the PS1 had shipped 28 million at the end of 1997.  The PS3 data from the site doesn't even include the entire 2008 year yet, so how was mike "comparing shipments" without this shipment information?

Without the full shipment data for the PS3, it is safe to assume VGChartz numbers are more than accurate and give the PS3 ~20 million units shipped at the end of 2008.  That means that the PS3 is tracking 8 million BEHIND the PS1, not 9 million above as MikeB stated.

@johnsobas

Even if I remove 2 million for the Japan early launch and just count the worldwide release the PS1 is at least 5-6 million ahead in equal time frames.  The main point though, is that MikeB was way off in his "PS3 tracking 9 million higher than PS1 in equal time frames" statement and even the data he claims to have used shows otherwise.

@theRepublic

Thank you   Just took a few minutes of google webpage translator.

that's why i said he was right in a crazzyman sort of way, we all knew the PS2 comparison was unfair and it was gonna lead to an epic in a few months, and this is no different.

actually to be completely fair to the ps3 you'd have to take out about 6 months of numbers for "others" since it launched in march, but it's still not gonna be close.

The day the PS3 overtakes the XBox 360 in total sales is when M$ finally fixed their console. The only reason why 360 is still outselling PS3 is 'coz of it's faulty console, owners have to buy 2 or more 360 console to replace the old one. I know someone who has 3 360 consoles, 1 for playing while the other 2 is for reserve incase the 1st one act up on him.
And they say the PS3 is expensive, ins't it more expensive to buy 2 or more of the same console due to rrod or e74? Do the math man.

OH Please! That's not how it works.....And by the way rafichamp called he said he was his post back!

yes ill be celebrating it aswell ill throw a party for it

WTF?  Who throws a party in regard to the sales of a bloody game console??  Who says it will be the best day of their life?  Who goes out of their way to cherry-pick meaningless statistics of PS3 vs PS1 to bolster their arguments?  This weird cult stuff you guys have going with MikeB as your group's Jim Jones is just scarey, literally.

I'm from NYC out here that Joke.....

That will be the happiest day in my life. So who is looking forward to this great defining moment?

I believe within 2 years PS3 will have overtaken the XBox 360 in console sales. Just you all wait and see. PS3 has more room to drop the console price over the coming years, it has more exclusive games, greater storage capacities with Blu-Ray and a longer future due to Blu-Ray being the long lasting media format.

I am so looking forward to the PS3 total sales overtaking 360 total sales. Many people just like me will be celebrating when PS3 overtakes the 360 and some of us will be saying: "I told you so"

PS3 and  following Sony is a religion to some, just like me.

Lol, how many of your friends will you invite considering you are 60 years old?  Surely most of them have moved on to other things rather than video games?

The PS3 needs to outsell the Xbox360 by 77k every single week, starting today to achieve this. And in 2 years, the Xbox360 userbase will be like 45-50 million. That is more than enough to guarantee 3rd party support. And in 2011 the Xbox360 will be on the market for 6 years. The Xbox 3 won't be too far away at this point.it

it doesn't have to do it in 2 years. 360 probably be discoutined first, sony have tons of first party studios to stay afloat at least enough to cut what will remain fro the 360 lead.

You have over 5,000 posts.  I would have figured that since you're still here, you're capable of some degree of logic.  Apparently, I was wrong.  My apologies.

there is a whole bunch of it behind it, since the ps3 have sold way faster the 360 did if you align launches, more chances for price c

cuts and still a strong First party support coming.

it's likely it will remain for at least a year more than 360.

Againg with the Aligned Launches. Just stop it!....The Only Launches that are comparable are the Wii and PS3...Compare those since they were within days of each other

MikeB wrote at the start of 2009:

I anticipate around 10 million sales per year on average, until the release of a "PSThree", then I expect the PS3 to sell around 15 million on average.

So 2007 + 2008, about 20 million, I anticipate a slimline PS3 to launch somewhere in 2009.

To quote myself from 2007:

Lots of my past writings are available on the internet, want me to look them up for you? I also predicted in mid 2005 that it would be troublesome to get legacy engines onto the Cell's SPEs, so it's not all just rosey expectations neither.

I expect the PS3 to continue to perform roughly on par with XBox 360 sales from the year before, until Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4 are all on the market (when that will be exactly may not even be known to the developers themselves.

Also from that thread regarding earlier expectations replying to a moderator:

Last year at the beginning of the PS3's launch I said the PS2 would be the big winner for christmas 2006 (I was right with regard to that one) and expected the PS3's first real sales victory worldwide over the XBox 360 for christmas 2007, I still think so, as data so far seems to back up my expectations.

I always thought Japan would turn PS3 as soon as Metal Gear Solid 4 and / or Final Fantasy XIII hit the market

Quoting myself from 2006:

I was talking about Christmas 2007.

For 2006 my prediction is that the Playstation 2 will be on top (not counting the handhelds). Nintendo Wii and PS3 will sell as much as their companies can produce. I think 2006 will also be a good year for the XBox 360 in closing, but will not get close to PS2 figures.

The Wii hype will dry down quite a bit, though still preferred by many young kids and females, after 2008 I expect HDTV penetration and higher expectations to considerably hurt worldwide sales, somewhere in 2009 I think HD DVD will have lost the format war and the Slimline PS3 really starts to take off.

This basically sums up my past expectations voiced here on VGChartz. I think overall pretty good, apart from HD DVD dying a little quicker than expected. And in another thread I expected an official PS3 price cut for 2008, which did not happen IMO due to the unforeseen weak dollar, high value yen and weak global economy. I expected great success for the Wii before it launched, but the amount has taken me by suprise as well. But they were closer to reality than many other expectations from other people.

Things IMO spot on:
- PS2 coming out on top for 2006.
- PS3 beating the XBox 360 for Christmas 2007, despite the release of Halo 3.
- HD DVD losing the high definition format war.
- Wii hype cooling down in 2009 (for example Japan, Wii owners complaining about party games, relatively bad 3rd party support, etc).
- Wii being popular amongst kids and females (refer to recent Nielsen study regarding demographics)
- Early Quick and Dirty 360 to PS3 ports.
- PS3 performing roughly on par with the 360 from the year before (actually it performs better, but that's why I stated "roughly").

Remains to be seen:

- Slimline PS3 for 2009 and its impact.
- Impact of Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3 for Japan.

IMO ignore the trolls and I think the above clearly demonstrates I am not a troll nor insane. The things I have written in the past here at VGChartz were not as bad as many would like others to believe.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Nice try on your defense post above this one.  Clearly there is much to be thought negatively about you since you commonly give incorrect information and once proven wrong (as I had the privelege this time) you ignore it and then go off and spread more misinformation.
