i agree its being hyped alot for being potentialy a good time away from being released. i how ever dont think its the best rpg this gen, why? because its more of a action/rpg than a actual rpg. also "lost odyssey" is the best rpg this gen. i will get mass effect 2 when it comes out, but i can wait till next year.

Lost Odyssey is a JRPG...not an RPG. Mass Effect is an actual RPG.

Mass Effect is a WRPG.... not an RPG. Lost Odyssey is an acutal RPG.

NYTimes names Mass Effect game of the year

A little lesbianism goes a long way as the New York Times names Mass Effect its game of the year for 2007. The NYT bestowed Mass Effect with the honor for its "focus on character development, personal growth and moral tension, all fueled by a graphics system created to evoke emotional empathy." Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was honored for being the shining star on the PS3 and BioShock was named the "best newcomer." There's also digs at Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy for being "unambitious representations of the state of the art."

Speaking of unambitious, for the second time in less than a month the New York Times copyeditors took a nap (albeit a minor one) on a video game-related story, which is slowly becoming inappropriate in covering an $18 billion-plus industry. There's no telling when reporter Seth Schiesel submitted his copy for this piece, but E3 2008 was already confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center last Tuesday, so the article's suggestion that "the solution for [E3] next year can be summed up in one word (or is that two?): Las Vegas" is just about 1,000 New York minutes behind the times.

Mass Effect wins Game of the Year at second Elan Awards

by Pulkit Chandna on Feb 20, 2008 at 06:23 PM

The Second Annual Elan Awards -  which honor excellence in the Canadian video game, animation and digital arts industries - were held at Vancouver last Friday (Feb 15, 2008). It was attended by the crème de la crème of the Canadian videogame and animation industries, along with digital art students still learning the ropes of the trade. The names of the winners were pompously announced at the glitzy ceremony, which had its share of technical flubs that were excused by the attendees and laughed off.

The show was hosted by animator Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame, who brought his impish humor along and also managed to win an award himself. His animated show Family Guy was ajudged the Best Animated International Television Production. In its second year, the Elan Awards even made room for international award categories.

Mass Effect, which was developed by Canadian developer Bioware, bagged the top honors. It was recognized as the game of the year and triumphed in four other categories. The game has set the benchmark for storytelling in videogames several notches higher. Assassin’s Creed was extolled as the best console game, while Company of Heroes and Socom U.S Navy Seals: Tactical Strike were named as the best PC game and Handheld game respectively.e

@ stage, I'm going for the ally achievements, and as I am a soldier, and Wrex is awesome, Tali is basically the only other option

What exactly is the achievement for per se?

WRPG's are RPG's (RPG's were created in the west). JRPG's have not one ounce of RPG in them besides for the battle system.

What now? Call of Duty 4 got a "Game of the Year" Edition as well. Much earlier than Mass Effect at that.

Other places GOTY -

GameSpy - Call of Duty 4
Yahoo! - Super Mario Galaxy (Mass Effect wasn't even a nominee)

You know, I could go on. But this website does it very nicely for you.

Mass Effect got the 7th most GOTY awards. Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Rock Band, and Halo 3 all got more awards.

JRPGs are RPGs. Not one ounce of Role Playing outside of a battle system. Give me a break.

Its amazing people have this much time on there hands to argue over who got a game of the year award, what a RPG is, and to complain about overhyping a game, when Killzone had like 30 threads on the subject

Well...In Fairness The Ny Times and the Elan award are more respectable than those two...But then again...Didn't Halo also get GOTY?

Edit: and all those games you mention aswell
