Forums - Gaming - Better graphics or more games

Just a general question i'm going to throw out there.

Would you be okay if more games were released but graphics took a hit as a result?

Thats not to say games would be released with shoddy graphics, just not so graphically centered as to have the significant increases in develop cycles that we have seen this generation.

My personal view is that im fine with it, nor do i think that 90% of devs can keep up with the extended dev cycles that have resulted from the overwhelming focus on graphics that seem to grip most HD games.

Your thoughts?

As long as the games are good, sure.

Good graphics is part of a good game. If they are trying to create a fully immersive experience, then they need good graphics as well. Why would you not want good graphics in your games. Insomniac deliver good graphics in their yearly games, why can't more devs do the same?

I like nice graphics and there are already too many games for me to play as it is.

So, a big fat NO.

If those games are quality then i'd rather have more games , but I can't even afford that many as it is.

I think that if a game has amazing graphics, then it is often heralded as a great game. However, I don't think the converse is true. A great game does not need amazing graphics to be heralded as a great game. There are other things that contribute to immersion: great music/sound effects, a storyline that is fun to follow, or the personalities of the characters. Amazing graphics are not needed to immerse a player, unless you are generally unaffected by music and a good story.

I'd rather more games come out, as graphics or whether or not the game immerses me does not matter to me that much.

I would love to sacrifice graphics for a better overall visual experience.

I would rather play a worse looking GTA with ZERO popup, for example.

Make something run PERFECTLY, then push the graphics as far as you can.

if a game had amazing music , storyline , cutscenes alone it wouldn't be herarld as a great game , why single out graphics ?

A game requires several components to be considered "great" , graphics are generaly one of the more recognisable and sought after aspects of the gaming experience but like any other component of a game , graphics alone can't make a good game.

there are already too many games...

I'd rather the devs spend the time making the games better, not nicer though...

I think you'll find this is a hard question for a lot of people to answer. They want both, and rightfully so. Me, I'd want more games. I think graphics (Pretty or ugly) only have a hold on you for a few seconds, and it's the gameplay that truly matters. I had zero interest in Wii Sports. It looked like crap, and I didn't even try it as a result. Long story short, it's mad fun and Wii Sports 2 will be a day one purchase for me.

I think it also depends on the genre. I think a FPS on the HD consoles wouldn't sell well if it didn't have good graphics to it.
