Forums - Gaming - Walkthroughs. Is It A Form Of Cheating.

Well, the Zodiac Spear was a poor design choice, as was that one weapon in FFIX that needed you to get to one of the final portions of the game in like under 12 hours (I personally think so, although the latter isn't that bad of one).

Anyways, I'll generally use a walkthrough if I'm stuck or on a second playthrough of a game. Also, I'll use one to find collectibles, as they tend to be huge timesinks in trying to find them on your own.

As a writer of guides myself (I have a few guides on GameFAQs under MasterVG782), though, I can see a lot of people using them on their first playthrough and stuff. I know I've gotten more than my share fair of e-mails from people thanking me for creating a guide. Also, I don't see why anyone would ever pay for a commercial guide (except for something made by DoubleJump, who make awesome guides) when there is GameFAQs and other sites similar on the net.

About the Zodiac Spear. That's simply idoitic design. The argument that it's incredibly overpowered doesn't stand, that's what final weapons are about. I'm all for making them hard to get but having to restart a new game because I screwed my chances of ever getting it by opening a chest I shouldn't have is bullshit.

Here's the thing: it's not the ultimate weapon. It's not even close. The Tournesol is better, the Wyrmhero Blade is better, the Masamune is leagues better - the Tournesol and Masamune in particular are better for taking on major hunts, and you can get two of the Masamune so you need no other weapons for taking on major boss battles.

The Zodiac Spear is not suitable for the final hunts because of its slowness and low combo rate. I still hold that its primary purpose is to make the final parts of the storyline as easy as they can possibly be.

Then what's the point in making it impossible to get?

What's the point in plenty of RPGs in making obscure weapons difficult to obtain (and most of those are impossible without prior knowledge)? The spear is there for those that want to get it, especially for those that are completionists like me. Hell, It's like an in-game trophy for those that have gotten it, even if it isn't the best weapon in the game.

The Masamune and Tournesol are indeed much better weapons for the later hunts, as more damage over time thanks to the combo rate. The Wyrmhero Blade can't be used on much, considering the only real use for it is on one optional boss in The Great Crystal.
