Forums - Gaming - I can't believe how some things are selling at this moment...

There are a bunch of games selling so well that never fail to shock me when I see them on the charts:

1.) Halo 3 - cmon, i know it's Halo, but isn't this taking it a little too far?

2.) Valkyria Chronicles - i didn't realize how much of an impact a little anime would do..

3.) Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - 3 mil + for a demo and still going?

4.) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - it's still selling 5 years later..

5.) Link's Crossbow Training - i know it's bundled with a peripheral, but are there really that many people using that thing?

6.) Monster Hunter Portable 2g - i didn't even know what Monster Hunter was before I saw this game chart like this.

And there are a bunch of games selling so badly that never fail to shock me when I don't see them on the charts:

1.) Resistance 2 - such a good game, yet such low appraisal..

2.) Star Ocean 4 - despite being on the 360 only, I thought it'd push a lot more than it did.

3.) Dissidia: Final Fantasy - it not even being anywhere in the Japanese charts is disturbing..

4.) Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars - i thought that despite being on DS, the GTA name would carry it through.

5.) Sonic Unleashed - this was the final nail on the coffin for the Sonic franchise.

6.) Metal Gear Solid 4 - can't say I'm not disappointed that even the Platinum re-release didn't do anything for sales.

  • Halo 3 -- You can just assume that every Xbox bought means another copy of Halo or Gears sold.
  • Valkyria Chronicles -- I'm actually surprised about this one too.  It's a good game but I thought I heard it was hard to find because just not that many were produced.  Guess I was wrong, it's hard to find because just that many people want it.
  • Resistance 2 -- it's not that good of a game and not even as good as the first one.
  • Star Ocean 4 -- I could have swore I heard this game was generic and nothing else, well, that and filled with bugs.
  • Dissidia: Final Fantasy -- I'm not too surprised, I'm sure it had a few giant opening weeks and then everyone that actually buys PSP games got theirs.
  • Chinatown Wars -- Not surprised either, good game, but wrong platform.  Good try for R* though.
  • Sonic Unleashed -- wait, you're surprised this is selling badly?  Also, sadly this is not the final nail because there are more games coming and more Werehog in those games.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 -- I am totally not surprised a niche game that was hyped to Hell had large opening weeks and then fell back down to niche level.

KillZone 2 is the most shocking for me. Its having a hard time in North America where good FPS sell millions.

not shocking. killzone 2 is a sequel to a sub-par game that didn't take off anywhere except europe, where it only did average as well, and it's on the most expensive console with the smallest user base.

Plus, it has a terrible B movie name, that never really helps (or at least doesn't help in that games case).

i thought resistance 2 would take off pretty well, considering a lot of people had resistance 1.

i thought star ocean 4 would sell well coz it's a pretty famous brand.

Dissidia has all the Final Fantasies rolled into it, meaning fans from the old and the new should've gobbled it up.. in my mind at least.

Chinatown Wars is still a GTA. I thought GTA was strong enough to carry it.

Sonic Unleashed could've been so great.. and i mean the final nail figuratively, meaning this was the last Sonic game that could've sold well.

MGS4, well I didn't expect it to sell more after the opening month, but at least I thought the platinum re-release would at least propell a higher weekly volume.

But Gears 1 was a new IP, and when it was released the 360 have a smaller user base then the PS3 now.  Look how well Gears 1 did.  And don't forget all the internet Hype and Magazine covers KillZone 2 received.  Don't get me wrong, I bought KillZone 2 on day 1 and I enjoy it alot more then Gears 2 and Resistence 2 but its just surprise me how its getting ignore by the North American market.

again, killzone 2 was a sequel to a game that basically was ignored, and it kinda sucked too in my opinion. that would've turned off a lot of fans. it also released in a time when so many shooters are already in the market. and it's on the ps3, where shooter fans don't necessarily go to.

gears, however, being a new ip, had no sour shoes to fill, and it was pretty much the first "next gen" looking game to be released. and it's on the 360, where the shooter market is on.

  • Resistance: Fall of Man sold a lot because there was just nothing else at the time.  If it had released a year or two later it would have just fallen in the cracks and you would likely have never seen a Resistance 2.  That's the great things about launch games, you can released mediocre to decent games and they sell millions and become classics because there isn't much else to choose from.  R:FoM was a decent shooter that had a lot of through backs to classic shooters like Quake and then threw all that out the window for R2.
  • Star Ocean 4 is an RPG and RPG's are just dying breeds.  If it doesn't have Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, it probably isn't going to do great.  I bet FFXIII is going to be the last huge RPG because they are just too expensive to make and they don't have enough of a return.
  • Dissidia didn't have Cloud and FFVII plastered everywhere and it was on the PSP where piracy is just bad.  I know this kind of breaks my above rule but the PSP piracy rule takes precedence on that.
  • The huge GTA fans moved from the PS2 to the PS3/360, not so much the DS.  Also, I don't think Chinatown wars had a lot of advertising.
  • I really didn't have any high hopes for Sonic Unleashed.  Sonic is the new Spyro.
  • MGS4 -- As I said, it's a niche game.  The hardcore fans bought it already and the hype train has ended so there shouldn't be anything really pushing it.  There are plenty of other cheap games with a way more interesting cover and a number much smaller than 4 next to the games name.

Twestern Im glade you bring the MGS4 cover up because it was boring, especially when you compare it to MGS3
