If we go by History, they were screwed no matter what...

You win twice then you're done... the next gen...

Atari 2600
Atari 7800
NES
SNES
PS1
PS2

Atari 7800 didn't win it finished dead last behind the NES and Sega Master System.

The SNES was the most powerful system of the main three (SNES, Genesis, Turbografx) and it sold well. Power isn't a problem, it's cost.

i am not sure sony could ahve antipated this. previous generations taught them that innovation is key and sony thought they could reach innovation with vastly expensive technology. they underestimated the strength of the playstation brand and that was ultimately their demise. i think this generation taught everyone lessons that they weren't aware of before.

prediction: wii to sell 150million console by end of 2010

It always annoys me when people talk about the win two, lose one rule. Clearly the problem in those cases was that the companies got too cocky after winning two gens. It's not something which necessarily has to happen in the future.

You know what would be awesome? If people were punished for talking about things they don't understand like "64 > 32" and "GD-Rom discs are completely readable by CD-Rom drives." It's really irritating to read so many absolutely clueless people making such awful comments knowing they will probably never realize just how un/misinformed they are.

On topic: Sony's big mistake was simply releasing a console well above accepted mass-market pricing. That's it. It's not the hardware (outside cost), it's not some nonsense about third consoles being cursed. It's not about the color of the case. It's not about marketing. It's about cost.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

The 7800 was competing against the NES since it was released so late.
