Forums - General - Wal-Mart Won't Carry $200 HD-DVD player.

This blog post is a repost of a 3 week old Video Business article and already somewhat outdated. Amir Majidimehr (Microsoft VP & HD DVD insider) stated in a recent interview that walmart would be carrying chinese HD DVD players most likely before the holidays. It was stated that the Venturer would be sold but possibly under one of the sister brands at Walmarts. Bestbuy was also said to have put an order in from Venturer.

In somewhat related Walmart news:

Newer walmarts have also been popping up with new 4-sided HD DVD / Blu-ray kiosks selling the HD-A2 and Sony BDP-S300. I can vouch for this personally. A brand new supercenter was opened by my house with this very display and both models of players being sold.

See:

The other side contains an almost identical Blu-ray display but this is the only picture I could find online

Never heard of Ventura, would not buy their product.

Well of course you wouldn't Hus, it's an HD-DVD player.

Had you ever heard of Venturer? I agree that the mass market will accept a next gen DVD less quickly than the accepted DVD, but I think the rate will get faster and faster since you almost have to try and buy a non-HD TV these days.

So? Even when HD-TV adoption reaches near 70% i'd be surprised if Blu-Ray surpassed DVD so long as it costs more.  You didn't even need a special TV for DVD.  Seriously it took DVD forever.  A format really needs to innovate to take over.  Blu-ray offers the common consumer next to nothing for 20 dollars more.

With Red-Ray entering the fray I wonder how this is going to turn out. Maybe retailers will boycot Red-Ray from the get go to avoid this costly war dragging out even longer.

Is that a joke? What is Red-Ray?

In many ways it is a joke of sorts, its a third format that will supposedly be debuting on the market to compete with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It's 10Xs cheaper than Blu-Ray with 30GB of space, doesn't have terrible loading times and seems to be an all around pretty appealing compromise of next gen HD media and what the consumer wants. The initial player for it said to be launched at $150. There are already some studios supporting it. I don't have the link with all the info but if someone else could find it that would be cool.
