Actually its because the brand name is not large enough for them to justify the floor space. Pity really because it will be a big loss for Wal-mart.

Although this may be true (or my guess could be it), they carried Vizio TVs and i had never heard of them before. Did you find this in an article or is this just your guess for why they don't carry it?

I assumed it based on some friends I have who work at one in the local college town, apparently they prefer to carry large name items and only carry lower quality items if they can get them in bulk deals or exclusivity agreements with Wal-Mart. But this is just my guess based on what I’ve been told.

So, any other place to get this player aside from the WalMart?

The two largest retailers in the nation, Wal-Mart and Target, will both not carry the player.  According to some other articles there are a few more lesser retailers that won't carry this either.  It should be on any online site though, including Target's, but not in store at Target.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

How about Meijer and K-mart? I know I'm tempted to pick up an HD-DVD player for that price.

"But many retailers, including Wal-Mart, Ultimate Electronics and Bjorn’s, say they are not committed to carrying the Venturer player, preferring instead to underscore products from bigger brand companies."

There isn't a definitive way to tell who will carry it until they make an announcement or until the product itself has shipped.

So that means that Wal-Mart, Target (not in-store at least), Ultimate Electronics, and Bjorn's will not carry this.

If the venturer shows up in just one major retail chain and sells well, it will be in all of them... I think it is a huge mistake not to test market it for walmart as anyone who BUYS a dedicated player will more than likely BUY at least a movie or two to go with it. Even if the profit margin isn't what they might get out of a "brand name", they want to sell the media. Period. Dedicated players are going to have a higher attach rate. Period...

I hate trolls.

Does this mean the quality of Venturer is in question? I've heard random things about the lead recently, too.

That’s true, the only thing I could imagine outside of the lack of a contract agreement would be the possibility of quality concerns or an incentive not to carry the brand from an outside source as most of these retailers already carry both HD-DVDs and players.

The original article without the nonsense lists a couple places to purchase the player. I would say it is a issue of volume, and brand recognition. However if venture could offer a substantial bulk at that price. Wal-Mart would probably sell the product. I think their waiting to see what the other players in the market do. They might be waiting to see if Toshiba follows suit and gets a entry level unit down to that price.

Realistically they still have a month to make a decision in order to get it on shelves for the Friday after Thanksgiving. So they do not need to be in a rush to make a decision. However if other parties do not step forward with their brand near that price. Then Walmart might feel compelled. You really cannot have another seller in town undercutting you by over fifty dollars on a comparable product.

Even though walmart may not be carrying this piece, I bet circuit city and/or best buy will.
