Forums - Sony - to answer question if sony lost more in ps3 then ps2 ANSWER INSIDE

For those interested, I made some rough estimations of what each of the 4 PS consoles has made throughout it's life.
In this thread:
http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=72293&page=1

PS1 - made in excess of $5 billion profit.

PS2 - has made about $3 billion (and counting, albeit slowly counting now)

PSP - was in the red, but I am certain it has at least broken even, and has probably made a few hundred million (and counting... probably counting faster than PS2 now as well)

PS3 - has lost in excess of $6 billion.

so since 1996 only $2 billion?

that was the point of my earlier post. assume ps3 loses (which it will) more money this year + all development costs for blu-ray + cell it is safe to say the ps3 has lost all money sony has made since 1996. its just the facts. like that is so sad and depressing in this world i dont like it as much as nyone else but people have to stop sugar coatingit

prediction: wii to sell 150million console by end of 2010

It's less than that actually.... it's about $1.6-1.7 billion, I did say in excess for PS1 and PS3 figures.... I think PS1 is pretty close to $5 billion, wheras PS3 has lost more like $6.5 billion.

I just PMed LiquidNinja about updating his thread:
http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=57802

That has the sum profit of the PS division at $2.26 billion, but only goes to March 2008.... this last year saw a further $600 million lost for SCE.

So with PS2, PSP sales much lower and the PS3 still loosing money, is there a chance the playstation project could lose everything it ever made?

What I am saying is, losing a buttload of money is nothing new to SONY. They do it every generation, each time out doing themselves. Sony has a few things all pooling from there pockets this gen.
THe PS3, PSP, and BluRay. Of course they have spent maybe the most this time then ever before. Yet every time what has happened? Sony comes out on top with there products and they make profits, thats 2 gens in a row. Now unless you can prove that Sony's plan isn't working, or that they don't have one, there is no proof that they won't do the same this time around.

uhhh.. i would say 3 years of loss that the ps3 has given them which totals more than they have pretty much made in their entire lifespan in the gaming industry (assuming the PSone made at least 150 billion yen) meaning everything they have worked for in the psone, ps2 and psp + software was wasted also accounting to the fact that they have projeted further loss in the future means there is no way their "plan" could work.

a few extra years of losses with a much more on the line makes perfect sense to me. Before Sony only dealt with PS1, then PS2. Now they are dealing with PS3,PSP, and BluRay. Thats three times as much to deal with, so I expect at least 3times as much loss of profit for the first few years, though when it kicks back it will kick back hard. That is when PS3,PSP, and BluRay become the most profitable.

Sony also sold 2.7 million BR players. I wonder what's the profit on that, since ps3 saved Blu Ray

except sony lost $1bn this year....

Yes, they lost 1bn this year total.

but that could mean that they lost 6 billion on ps3, but made 5 million off of BR. Or does that not make any sense at all?

I check their investor relations pages and saw that like 40% of all loss comes from currency rates.

lol honestly ... now that is what you call optimism, do you really believe thinking it will make it true?

has any one done some in depth analysis?

id really like to know how highly geared sony is and what their dividend payout is. with absoloutely no retained profits their gearing is only going to get worse. how are interest rates in japan/ US right now?

I could have swore that there have been reports of Sony borrowing money from the banks.  You don't borrow money unless you need to.  Can someone dig up how much money Sony has in loans from the bank?

It's all here:

http://www.google.com/finance?fstype=bi&q=NYSE:SNE

Long term debt: 685 billion yen ($7.18 billion)

Total debt: 1.2 trillion yen ($12.6 billion)

As of the end of 2008.

If last year was the first year they lost money for 14 years.  How bad were the years prior?  I find it hard to understand why all of these companies posting profits have such huge debts when we don't see the losses until just recently.  I'm really scratching my head over the GM issues.  How do they go from making record profits every year until this past year and then go bankrupt?

That's a pretty big hole that Sony is going to need to climb out of.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

The debt has likely been used to make Sony a bigger company and expensive things like building factories (some of which are being shut down now).

It's just like a person who has a job and was paying a mortgage, not saving much money. If they lose their job, it's pretty likely they'll have to cut a lot of expenses and/or say goodbye to the house.

Companies like Microsoft and Nintendo have zero to little debt and a lot of cash stored away for moments like these. Sony has the opposite.
