Forums - Microsoft - Quite surprised Xbox isn't getting many 3rd party exclusives in 2009

yeah, so far its been a disappointing year so far for the 360.

All the exclusive released so far have left me unimpressed.. although I haven't played Star Ocean 4 yet..

So you reason that by making those games only available on 360 all of a sudden 360 owners will flock to the stores to pick up these games? While they didn't show this behavior although the game is just as available on their platform when being a multiplatform game? I'm sorry, but that simply doesn't make sense.

But it does. Think about it, had GTA IV been a PS3 exclusive from the get go, would it have sold better AND lots of PS3s? I would think so.

When you believe there's only going to be one version, you're more inclined to pick it up. Why do you think Halo Wars and Gears 2 aren't on PC? Maximizing sales!!! Microsoft knows what they're doing, which is why I can see where disolitude is coming from.

We're talking about third parties here, moving hardware is not their problem. And an exclusive GTA IV would have sold millions of copies less than the multiplatform version. So how would that help Take Two?

No, you're not more inclined to pick up a game when it is only on 1 platform. The only difference is that if you want to buy the game you only have 1 available platform to choose from. And Microsoft is not third party, so of course they want to move their hardware.

How not? Exclusives will convince folks on the fence about picking up a system, to go and pick it up. Take GTA III for instance, was it not the breakout PS2 hit? It was what move LOTS of PS2s. I have NO doubt GTA IV would have done the same for PS3.

This thread isn't about hardware sales, it is about software sales. No doubt an exclusive will sell more on one platform when it is exclusive, but this is more than offset by the loss of all the sales on the other platforms.

I still don't understand why would be the financial motivation for either Microsoft or third parties to do such a move with titles like Riddick or FEAR 2....

Riddick is two games, the port of the old one which is quite good and the new stuff which is bah.
As for FEAR 2, it might be a good games but the graphics are bah...

I can already imagine a FEAR2 commercial with the shitty graphics saying ' only on XBOX360 !'

Seriously...
Why would Microsoft pick up a 500k+ marketing tab to move 500 more units of hardware............
Especially for action games. There are already so many on the 360, if people didn't move for Halo 3, Gears, Gears 2, Bioshock, they aren't gonna move for Riddick or FEAR2.......

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

What I'm saying is, GTA IV may have ended up with more TOTAL sales had it been exclusive, actually, to ANY system.

Now you are dreaming...

GTA4 as of now has a 26% attach rate on either platform in the US....

If it was a PS3 exclusive and even if it helped move 1 million more PS3 worldwide ( more than doubtfull), for the PS3 exclusive version to sell as much as the Xbox360+PS3 version together would mean GTA4 PS3 would have to sell over 11 million units WW and reach an attach rate of 50%+

This ain't just happening....

Aside from Games that come with peripherics you can't expect games to reach over 30% attach rate....

I guess we'll never know, but it didn't seem impossible. Have you forgotten how big that launch was?

I don't think you realize what a 50% attach rate means....

Mario Kart Wii, the game every Wii owners purchase and that still sells 100k units/week 1 year after its launch has an attach rate of 31.5%..............

@ Ail

I do understand, but what do you think GTA IV would have sold on PS3 or 360 as exclusives?

At best in the wildest dream it would have reached a WW attach rate of 30% on the given platform.

You can't really do more with the different demographics of each platform...( and even that is hard because in countries like Japan the game doesn't do so well).

So somewhere south of 10 million units on the 360 and around 7-8 million units on the PS3 ( I'm convinced the exclusivity would have boosted PS3 hardware more than 360 hardware due to the fact that last gen it was a PS game..).

But we're speaking GTA4, for more medium less known games/franchises, going exclusive just loose you the gamers of one platform with little benefit ( because Microsoft isn't going to pick up the marketing tab of every game and the majority of gamers aren't as shallow as on this site and won't pick a title over another because it's exclusive and the other isn't. They will pick the better/more fun title and that's it).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Mostly the reason for not a ton of exclusive 3rd party support is there are more players with respectable install bases this year. 2007 everyone was sitting lower than 360 so ofcourse support would be o'plenty. Now it's 2009 and it's rivals have exceeded it or are not that far behind it (360). So any developer would be crazy if he did not also try to have his games also come to those other platforms. Why only cater to 30million when you can cater to 51 million?
