Somewhere out there a blue hedgehog is laughing his ass off.

not another sega lamentation...I guess it's impossible to see that sega killed sega just like sony is close to doing to itself. Neither of these companies fell because of competition. I give up on you guys though....can't keep saying the same thing over and over again.

While sega did plenty of damage themselves...Dreamcast was essentially killed by PS2 hype. No one can deny that. I am not blaming sony for doing this, but I find it funny that the same strategy that worked last gen (bundling DVD with console) is screwing them in the rear this gen... hence why blue hedgehog is laughing.

I don't hate Sony myself...jsut find it funny thats all. Did you know that many people from Sega moved on to Sony aftewards?  Did you know that the guy that made sonic the hedgehog works for Naughy Dog and worked as a gmae designer on such games as Jak 2 and 3 and Uncharted?

You really believe that? It's sounding like a religious belief among you guys and if that's the case I will cease to waste my time typing. Do people really believe that hype makes up a great portion of the success of anything? Hype is just a product of corporate gloating...nothing more. Sure sony said ps2 was a supercomputer built to save the world but it was pretty obvious when the launch titles came out that that wasn't the case. Why did it go on to sell 140 mil? Didn't sony tell all those lies? Answer: with the exception of a few strange individuals, no one cares what sony said. People buy what system has the games they want to play that they can afford and that was the ps2 last gen.

If sega hadn't already duped consumers with all their bogus add-ins and outs and their short-lived console cycles, they'd have done better. that kind of behavior is more damaging thhan some stupid PR rant. This is also part  of the reason why sony is bleeding this gen out because there'll be no next-gen for them if they don't finish this one.

It's good to see the sonic guy found a new job. No wonder every sonic game has sucked since.

The thing is, sega lost 300-400 million dollar 2 years on a row and were almost completely out of business.

Sony and Microsoft have huge amounts to burn for these consoles and you can't deny that didn't have an impact on a smaller competitor like sega. Hell even Nintendo was feeling the burn before the Wii...

Also, Saturn destroyed N64 in Japan where it had proper support...your previous statement that people would not have bought the saturn if there was no PS1 is completely unfounded. Saturn needed 1 game called Final Fantasy to be on its system and sega would still be making hardware today...

So sony killed sega because their company is better equiped to endure losses? You don't bite off  more than you can chew. If sony corp. uses a loss-lead model, you don't copy them without the funds behind you. This is why nintendo still profited from N64 and GC era whereas sega is nowhere to be found.

Why is it that you think all the brunt of sony's entry into the market was aimed at sega and not nintendo? If you ask me, the leader of the previous gen is the target for competition...just ask M$.

If FFVII wasn't on PS, it would have been on N64 and Saturn won't have beat the N64 in Japan. Notice how square was in talks with nintendo before they went PS and not Sega? What makes you think they'd have switched to sega not stuck with nintendo who at the time had no failures whatsoever? Games like street fighter and FF were ninty titles not sega's. If you think sony moneyhatted to get FFvii, do you think sega could have outbid nintendo for the title?

Saturn however, is not my main focus because it didn't set the nail in the coffin...it's the dreamcast. It is hailed as the console genius that the devil called sony corp threw away and killed sega. It is also the one responsible for sega's losses if I'm not mistaken. If you say that saturn prospered even during the existence of ps1, why do you think ps2's great hype got rid of the DC?

You are wrong on so many levels man...

1. Sega had loses in 1997 with the saturn and 1998 with...umm nothing...and then 1999 with the dreamcast. However they had a profitable 2000...with the Dreamcast. Dreamcast sealed its fate because

2. FF7 would have never been on n64. It was supposed to be on n64 until nintendo went with a cartrige format.

3. You are praising sony for having deeper pockets to survive bigger losses. But then you should really be praising MS who are even better equipped to take losses until they sink the competing console...

1. Dc sealed it's fate because? If even the saturn was losing money even after outperforming nintendo in JP. I think it's safe to say that sega didn't know what it was doing/ wanted to do..

2. What makes you think so? Word goes around that a moneyhat from sony sealed the deal not the CD format. If ninty was the best option, ffvii would have been forced to fit a cartridge like it's previous iterations. You seem really sure that square would have moved to sega when it's possible that ninty let go of the title because they didn't want a bidding war with sony.

3. I'm not praising sony for having deeper pockets. Their corporation is bigger and thats just the way it is. You play a game the way you can win. I really have nothing against M$. As far as I'm concerned, they entered the market the best way they saw fit and tried to win the best way they could but if you ask me, it wasn't the cash that helped them usurp sony this gen. Sony overthrew itself with mismanagement just like sega. Sony is still around because they are bigger...life isn't fair.

Let me use a dating analogy. One guy is really rich and using his money to woo the girls. Another guy isn't as rich. Is it better for the second guy to take the money route to win the girls over or to try a different approach style? If the money-less guy loses the competition, should he sit and cry or find another way to compete? If the poor guy loses out, who should b blamed? Note that the girls in this scenario are analogous to gamers in real life. If you're the type who blames the girls then that means gamers are to be blamed for sega's downfall since they went with the company that bought all the support.

Sega was the relatively broke guy who tried to compete with money while nintendo was the relatively broke guy who took a whole different route. Thats why nintendo is stronger than ever despite the "big bad corporations" looming over it and sega is nowhere to be found.

The economy is hurting their entire company. The PS brand isnt the only thing affected. Their TVs, stereos, computers, movies, etc are all producing less money for them than normal.

I doubt that the PS4 will be like the Wii of this generation! Sony would be better not making a console at all since that is not what the Playstation brand is all about!

Sony will have come through worse, and with the Yen getting better they should be in a better situation this financial year and also all these losses were made before the restructuring that has taken place in the last few months!

really I thought the Wii was what sony was all about.  Weren't they always the weakest console, didn't htey always bring in some type of motions stuff with eye toy and others.  Didn't they have a shit ton of what some call casual crap.

sounds to me the ps3 is what Sony isn't about.  They listened to the niche tech geeks in having insane power and everything all in one box.

Doom & gloom... doom & gloom! It is not just SONY, but all the giants in Japan and heaps of other countries, too. These are the times that test their strength. Things are picking up, tho and SONY is no push over.

i thought they were both supposed to be out like may 7th. (sony, nintendo)

Sony's comes out the 14th..my bday btw;)

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

people fail to realise that it is not just SONY, but all heavy exporters due to the Yen, $. Toyota, Nissen, Panasonic, etc, etc are all taking it up the back side. I am sure their are a lot of silly, jealous fanboys that would want SONY to go, which would be a very massive blow to the gaming world if they did, (gaming needs diversity). I cannot see that happening, tho as SONY is too strong a company.
