Forums - Sony - The PS3 won't make it past 2012 in America at retail.

^ Not really, even if the Xbox 360 wasn't sold in Japan and every Xbox 360 sale became a PS3 sale, the Xbox 360 would still be ahead of the PS3 in the weekly numbers.

The year 2012 will be the time PS3 will be in front of XBox 360 in total console sale install base. The gap between PS3 and XBox 360 would be rapidly closing in America in 2012. The PS3 will continue selling in 2012 and a few more years later when it stops selling in 2016 after its 10 year life ends.

Thats what I believe. Does anyone have any good reason to counter that without referencing a 10 year plan?

Retailers and consumers decide how long something remains on the shelves. So if there are next generation consoles competing for shelf space, that shelf space is only going to come out of the lowest selling consoles alotment. It happens every time a generation switch over occours, and there has never been a precedent where 2-3 next generation and 2-3 current generation consoles have been sold at the same time at retail. So why would we face anything different if the same basic reasons behind this are the same? Since the PS3 is the lowest selling console, it will be the first to get kicked to the curb.

*Response to the bold* I wish I could believe what you're saying Squiliam, but Sony undermined the market and moneyhatted retailers to help Blu Ray survive. How could the PS3 not last? Look at how much Sony spent just so Blu Ray could stay in the market. The Gamecube sold a low amount of consoles, but it still sold where I live.

Its in Microsofts best interests to weaken Sony as much as possible. The more people they can get signed up with Xbox Live, the greater their chances of winning the next generation as well. Hell, im half expecting them to do a little price cut after E3 -> Drop price $50, introduce new SKUs with that camera at higher but still low price of say $270 and have the Arcade at $180 etc that way people can leave the store with change from $200 or $300 after sales tax. But that seems really foolish without confirmation of any kind.

Microsoft has already weakened Sony. They will continue to haunt Sony's ten year plan with the 360's existence. Microsofts doing their job, but I believe Sony has put the nail in the coffin to keep the PS3 valid to the market. If the PS3 fails, there will not be a PS4.

I wouldn't say that, I would just say that it would make the PS4's life a LOT harder. They could still pull something out, the fact that they are in the race means something, because just getting here costs billions.

Tease.

Once PS3 hits $299.99 we will find out.

The PS3 box is too big - that is shelf space better used for Sega Dreamcasts.

That much is true!

I completely disagree. The fact that your title says "the PS3 won't make it past 2012" implies that 360 and Wii will. If those two consoles are still on shelves, the PS3 will be as well. If PS3 is being pulled, its either after or at the same time as 360. So yeah your title is completely off. The numbers that 360 is doing compared to PS3 is nothing compared to what Wii is doing compared to the two. Sony will not pull PS3 off the shelves if 360 is still around.

Thread should be named "the HD twins wont make it past 2012 in America at retail."

The only way the 360 is not going to come in dead last in worldwide sales this generation is a $99 Arcade model being announced at E3. Microsoft's investors are already crying foul at all the money being wasted on the 360, the weakest product in the whole company. The only way they could sustain a $99 price point is to liquidate their remaining units and discontinue the 360. I think that they will not do this and Microsoft's stock value will continue to tank as the current leadership insists on throwing more money at this product.

Squil, reading threads you make is unbearable. You have the worst logic ever.

When you just *post* in someone elses thread, you use logic. You don't sound like a fanboy.

When you do stuff like this, you're just a fanboy. It's annoying=/

Price determines most everything. Its still $400 or have you forgot. Through price cuts alone its got another 3/4 years of shelf life easily.

Then there are the games but this is where Sony decides PS3 fate. As long as they are making games and selling them so will 3rd party's.
