Forums - Sony - The PS3 won't make it past 2012 in America at retail.

I can't be sure that it is going to happen in 2012, but I do agree that the PS3 and 360 are going to lose support first when the next generation rolls around.

Can't argue with that.  I wonder if, now being in second place, vice last, Microsoft will continue to support 360 past the first month of its new console.

I hope so!  That is unless the next Xbox is fully 100% backwards compatible.  This time around I will be a launch night purchaser

You know that whole "aligned launches" thing everyone tries to do to make the PS3 look like it is doing better than the 360 in worldwide sales?

Well here is the aligned launches for the America region only. The PS3 is not trending anywhere near the 360 in this region even after MGS4 and big game releases and price cuts.

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii®1=America&cons2=PS3®2=America&cons3=X360®3=America&weeks=156

because the fact one came out before the other offset the whole thing. The reason US clung to 360 like crabs was due to its early release and from tat point they dont want to actually buy another console, regardless of anything else that is going on. It was an impulse buy due it it hitting first and being pretty good in its own right.

Had they released on the same date, there would have been no time for the media to bash it nonstop, there would have been no pompous"late for the party" advertisement from MS, but there would have been the extremely strong Sony Playstation Brand name to simply trounce over the competition.

Had they launched at the same time, Gears 1 would have been a launch title and the Xbox 360 would be sporting even more capable Direct X 10 class hardware for the GPU and perhaps another core on the CPU.

Exactly.  They always try to make it look like the year headstart was only a positive, but in fact had they waited it could have been better for the 360.

They ignore the argument of "360 launched earlier and people were waiting for all the consoles to make their pick" when they view the worldwide aligned launches, but when the PS3 has never done well in America they STILL think it can somehow follow the PS2's sales?

@GameAnalyzer
What reason would I have to believe the PS3 will follow the PS2's sales trends when so far the PS3 has not been even remotely close.  Even big games haven't sold well and haven't moved that many PS3's in America.  And since when were Infamous and Heavy Rain ever even considered for a 360 release?

I didn't mention that ps3 has acquired the ps2's sales pace. But it will with onset of sales rise induced by price-cut.

I hope u visit sites outside VGC which keeps mentioning about the games that loses or gains exclusivity. Heavy Rain is one example. U can google or

It must have been a really old article. Half the people replying to the link you gave me had never even heard of it being in development for 360.

And what about Infamous?

Also, again, the PS3 has shown no signs of resembling the PS2 sales trends. Upcoming price cuts and new games will not change it just as the past price cuts and games didn't. The PS3 is never going to achieve PS2-like sales.

I agree with squillam, PS3 is doing pretty terribly in the States at the moment, and we still dont know when will the rumoured price cut arrive and will it have any pernament impact (in my opinion, it will have tiny, just like GC and Xbox Impacts had in relations to PS2) it will provide a short term boost but nothin major compared to what is needed (and what did 360 achieve last holidays). PS3 simply is not popular in the states and thats a fact, 6 years of sales sound pretty realistic. I overall think that PS3 might struggle to outsell lifetime sales of PSP , because PSP recovered well in Japan.

I want all consoles to do well, but Future in the States for PS3 looks grim.

This is how i expect someone to comment on rather than simply supporting their fav console boasting about facts.

Now for the bold statement in your post. It's not a tiny impact instead a big impact upon price-cut. Infact so spontaneously high in contrast to 360's holiday 2008

Well i hope im wrong, but the problem lies elswhere. Xbox 360 was arleady a popular product in the US without the price cut, different price point just increased its popularity. I think wii would share similar faith if the price is slashed, but the PS3 has this common thing with GC in the States for example that there is not that much demand for it (even software sells better in Others)  so i dont expect from PS3 to improve as much as the 360 did. I just hope that they can somehow become profitable before they slash the price, cause it would be a risky move.

I'm sorry, I didn't know you had been to the future to see the amount, date, and impact of the PS3 price cut.  Don't give your opinion as fact.

Also, the 360 is said to respond to price cuts so one price cut will again not help the PS3.  The PS3 will always be in last in the US and all the momentum will continue to be stollen by the 360 until the market is saturated and the PS3 will not have any more chances.  By the time the PS3 is mass market $200 the next gen will have started and the 360/Wii will have saturated the American market.

Fixed for you, my brotha.

Still waiting on some actual proof that the PS3 sells better in big cities, as everything I've seen shows the 360 sells better and is more popular.  Hollywood loves the 360.
