Forums - Sony - Square Enix: We're Extremely Worried About Piracy

By FinalFantasyUnion

Sony have been very vocal about their piracy fears on their Playstation Portable system, and they've been trying to think of ways to counter the issue. Square Enix are obviously one of the biggest publishers in the world, and they've supported the PSP quite strongly recently, with the releases of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

Takeshi Arakawa, the director of Dissidia: Final Fantasy spoke about his fears regarding piracy on the system:

"We are really worried about this issue [piracy]... extremely worried.

The issue of piracy is quite concerning on PS as well and our basic stance is that it’s unfortunate, but what’s been done has been done and we can’t do much about it. We want to stick to a policy of making a game that the player would be proud of owning, so even if you play the pirated version, the game should be good enough to convince them that they should purchase the game. So long as we manage to do that, the issue doesn’t really exist.
"

However, the sales of Dissidia have actually been quite impressive on the PSP, as it's almost sold 1,000,000 units and will surely sell even more when it's released in the West later this year. Mr. Arakawa didn't seem to entirely agree though:

"Hmmmmmm, *laughs*. The piracy has been quite bad in Japan as well, but we have enjoyed quite good sales wise for two reasons. One, it came out in the Christmas season when people are more prepared to pay and we have lots of fans who have been playing the series for the last 20 years and they don’t mind paying a bit of money to get Dissidia."

If Dissidia can do what did, an RPG from them should do fine.

I sure hope so. I don't want this game to suffer due to piracy.

yeah; FFXIII on 360 will not be downloaded lol, good luck

If they are worried about piracy then they really should think about releasing more games on the PS3 since it is piracy free (as far as i am lead to believe at the moment)...

WTH are you talking about? Have read the whole thing? It seems you just read the thread title. We're not talking about FF13 here, We're talking about Final Fantasy Dissidia. The game on PSP. Where piracy is very rampant.

This is a topic on piracy, not just a single system. While the PSP has heavy piracy so does the Xbox 360.

Then again why give up XBOX LIVE for a pirated game?

@Hayeya

If FF XIII is as big as square says its going to be, I highly doubt people are willing to wait to download a game large than 25 gigs.
