Forums - Sony - Blu-ray is doing FINE, haters need to give it up.

Almost every week I can't help but come across someone's ill-informed topic about how Blu-ray is doing soooooo bad compared to DVD. And that guy from IGN made the worst arguement I've ever heard.

Anyways, here's some news that puts things in perspective: http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/blu-ray-report-npd-group

Although, not specifically in this article, Blu-ray's adoption rate for hardware and software is moving along faster than DVD's rate at the time it launched back around 1997. And to top it off, you need to buy an HDTV to enjoy Blu-ray, which makes for a smaller demograph. DVD on the other hand could be enjoyed by anyone with a TV(99.9% of the population)

The only thing stopping blu-ray is the fact that it isnt any different to the average consumer than a dvd.

The only reason vhs was discontinued because of the dvd was because of the physical look of it (thick rectangular medium vs thin small circular medium) and because of this blu-ray will never beat dvd but it still will be a respectable medium.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

blu ray is the way, we are seeing the benifit with video games and on disc storage, the only people against it are the xbox 360 fan girls, that would give there left nut if xbox had it, and ps3 did not, sony was very smart in his area, they looked down the road and built a system that was so far ahead, they did not even know how to program for it yet, they have just now touvhed the tip of what the system can do, that is why sony games blow and 360 game graphicly out of the water, so you spend 400 dollors on the best game system with blu ray, wifi ready, browser, HDMI, 80 gig hd, and sony only has a less then 1 % fail rate, and there online gaming is free, then you have xbox360, no blu ray, 60 gig hd for 300 dollors , then you spend another 100 bucks on wifi, then controller battery packs, what another 40 bucks x 2 controllers, then you spend money on xbox live, they finally included HDMI on there systems, what do you have ? a system that costs more, has less hd space, no blu ray, and has a fail rate of 30% still after how many years, great job microsoft, im on my 3rd 360 in a year, and i play my ps3 way more, and had no problems, microsoft is scared sony is about to slap them good in 2009 and on, this will be fun

99.9% of the worlds population do not own a tv. Your analogy is false.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Thats not true.  VHS degrades over time.  It degrades from usage, from dirty heads, from humidity and heat to a degree as well.  Anyone who had a VHS they played a ton or anyone renting a well worn movie from a rental store can attest to this.  This had a lot to do with it going away in addition to DVD taking up less space.

Is that meant to be a joke? I certainly wouldn't be correcting anyone with stats like that.

Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

To be fair though you link something that:

a) is not a news article.  Its from a fan of Blu-ray.  He finishes the "article" with "Keep up the good work Audioholic(.com) Blu-ray fans".

b) is something where the author admits he does not fully understand the report data saying "I wonder if by standalone players NPD Group includes PlayStation 3?".

No he means that the statement that "99.9% have TV" is not correct.  He is not saying 99.9 percent of the world does not have TVs.
