Thats not true.  VHS degrades over time.  It degrades from usage, from dirty heads, from humidity and heat to a degree as well.  Anyone who had a VHS they played a ton or anyone renting a well worn movie from a rental store can attest to this.  This had a lot to do with it going away in addition to DVD taking up less space.
