Forums - General - Ricky Gervais explaining how he became an Atheist

Remember, I said I believe in God. I never said I was any specific religion, and I definitely never said I was Catholic.

Atheism just seems like isolated. Eureka! There are no atheist conventions or meeting or gatherings. Humans need social interaction, but atheism just looks like a lonely endeavor. That's what I was trying to say; they can love people lol

You don't need to abide in the cultural fantasies known as religion, to gather people for social interaction. One example is a music concert, another example is a comic book convention. Another example is forced institutions, like schools.

Common interests can bind people, the common interest doesn't need to be about a unproven theory about a magic sky man.

@Saviour. So you're saying that you cannot say that Hitler was a bad person? Or that Jesus was a good person? Afterall, both of those are judgements.

As for atheists not having explanations for things, a lot of us look long and hard for explanations. Usually explanations can be found through things like logic and the scientific method.

By judgments, I mean people I meet in my own life. Hitler was one of the worst people in history, there is absolutely NO dispute about that. That is why I hope there is a God, because if there is, Hitler has a place to go to account for his atrocities, instead of dying like a coward and taking his own life, avoiding punishment.

So if you met a serial rapist in real life you would not judge him for his crimes?

I judge people based upon their actions, a person who does bad things is a bad person, unless they change their ways in which case I change my judgement.

My religion is basically Nintendo and David Bowie. So I'm really really happy.

Scientists just have faith that Dark Energy exists.  Just how they had faith that certain elements on the periodic table existed before anyone was able to recreate them in a labratory setting.

I know this was a while ago, but faith is not the right word here.  The right word would probably be theory.  They have a theory that dark energy exists.

There isn't really a difference.  I mean... what makes Dark Energy anymore credible then "God is pushing the universe" or "Dark space wind is pushing everything created by a white hole."

Yes, there is a difference between those words.  It may seem subtle, but there is a difference.

You also seem to be getting hung up on the words "dark energy".  We know there is something out there causing these unexplained observable effects.  We happen to call it dark energy.  The name doesn't matter.

No we don't.  We don't know something is out there.  We think something it out there because it fits in to our viewpoint.

There is no difference between Dark Energy and God at this point... or invisible Spagetti monsters pushing things for that matter.

That makes no sense.

That makes no sense.

Yes it does.

We know the universe is expanding faster then normal.   We expect the opposite to be true.

We have no clue what is doing it or why it is happening.  So we dub what is doing it "Dark Energy".

And that's it.  That's all we know about Dark Energy.  Apparently it is causing the universe to expand fast and.... nothing.

Someone could of just as eaisly said "God" is doing it... or Tony Danza for that matter.

Or tiny particles called "Dark Pixe Dust" that use space folding to make everything move faster due to "pixie waves".

For that matter, we don't know what makes gravity work.  You might as well call that God, too.

Yes we do.

GF = (G*m1*m2)/ (D^2)

Mass makes gravity work.

We don't why or how it works.  All that we really know is that objects with more mass have more gravity.
