Forums - Sales - Can Dragon Quest IX set a new 1st week sales record?

The japanese top 10 for 1st week sales is as follows:

DQVIII launched in 2004 on a userbase of 17 millions. DQIX is expected to launch on 7.11.2009 on a userbase of 27 millions.

Also, the highest 1st week sales record for any single-platform title in a single region ever is held by Halo 3 with 2,844,837 copies sold on a launch week in North America. Can DQIX beat that?

I'd really really like to think it could, but as with all massive launches it depends on the ad campaign!

I don't think so. It will rather be something like 1.5-2M first week and then strong legs to carry it for some insane amoun sold.

Dragon Quest games don't tend to sell that way, people normaly buy them within the first few days. That's why Japan has a law which states that Dragon Quest games can only be released on weekends so people don't take days off work to buy them.

Official or unofficial law?

No, it won't.

And Halo 3 sold 3.82 million in its first week, not 2.8 million.

^No, Halo 3 only sold 2.8 million on its launch week in North America. I made it pretty clear in the OP that I am talking about sales in a single region, learn to read.

Lol.  Anyway I am not sure it can manage to beat the Japan 1st week record.  That just seems like a crazy number and it seems Japanese just don't buy that many games anymore at least not in week 1.

I don't know if it'll beat Halo 3 US launch - I really doubt it. I don't even know if it can touch FFVIII's Japanese week 1 record.

I'm only full of doubt because of how pathetic the Japanese market has been over the past year. I just can't see anything selling above and beyond expectations there.

If any game can do it though, it'd definitely be Dragon Quest IX. So I can't wait to see how it does.

It could happen but I think it depends on just how massive the marketing is and the size of the initial shipment. The popularity of the franchise isn't enough to get everyone to buy it the first week. When Halo3 was released Microsoft were really shooting for that record
