As others said - it depends on what games he likes the most. If all he likes is Mario games then Wii is the answer. If he like MSG then PS3 and if he likes Halo then 360. If he likes to play with you then whatever console you have.

Just pop in some L4D and it will decide for him.
Racer? Gran Turismo 5 and MotorStorm 2
Shooter? Killzone 2, Resistance, Uncharted, etc.

Tell him to read the thread where someone else was deciding weather to get a ps3 or 360 , what ever can be said here will more than likley be said on that thread
360 is his best bet if he likes shooters and racers. The 360 controller is far superior for shooting games.
id say 360 because it has the best shooters (arguably) but for racing games its a toss up. They both have Burnout and Midnight club and the 360 has forza 2 and PS3 has GT5.
For shooters id give it handily to the 360.
For Racers i think the PS3 edges out the 360.
It depends on what he wants Both are great systems

Shooters I'd favour the 360, racers is kind of equal (could swing either way with FM3 and GT5). Ultimately the problem is what is good for me or others could be totally different for your friend so all advice you'll hear is unsuitable in my opinion.
