IV had a fairly simple (but well-paced and executed) plot about saving your love and then the world

I always thought the underlying theme of FFIV's plot to be that of redemption. Still simple, well-paced and excuted, but there was a bit more drive behind the plot other than saving Rosa and then the world. (I realise you were just shortly summing up the plots, but FFIV often gets a tad oversimplified in that department)

Touche! I'm quite embarrased that I managed to forget that.

Which is why i say it was pretty complicated.  I mean... ever playable character in that game had something they needed to redeem in that game.

SPOILERS:

Cecil - The obvious

Kain - See end of game.

Ryda - Powerlessness at the destruction of her villiage, irresponsibility of striking out in anger rather then listening that they were used.

Edward - Death of his wife.

Tellah - Death of his daughter

Polom and Porom -  Spying on Cecil.... Porom's immaturity.

Cid - Built vast weapons of war that were used for bad deeds.

Rosa - Enabled Cecil by being overprotective out of love and wanting their life to be ideal rather then doing the right thing even if it might cause waves.

Edge - Let his parents die.... weakness... flirting with women.  Batmanesque tye thing.

Fusoya - Lets Zeromus get out of control.

Goblez - Well that's too much spoilers... but... you know.

Yang - The guilt and sin of being the only survivior of a deadly battle in which all of his men are brutally killed.  Strong... but not strong enough to save those he cares about.

Agreed. Simplified storytelling and a myriad of histories focusing to a common theme makes for one helluva plot.

You've got me itching to start up FFIV DS again.

Yeah FFIV starts with you murdering the innocent and burning down their village. The game is about guilt, repentance, forgiveness, and redemption.

You save the world, but only after watching so many people sacrifice so much while you were murdering and pillaging for your kingdom. Then you realize there is a greater cause.

This is some serious Messianic stuff.

The fact that they can sneak in romance and a potential apocalypse is just proof that they used to really care about plot and character development, and making them both work together. Newer games seem to focus on one or the other.

I think that's why FFIV is considered one of the best.

I really wish FFIV: The After Years were a game that focused on Cecil and Kain's Red Wings years. That'd be much more interesting! As it is now, I can't seem to get excited about it.

Haha... no worries. I was just thinking about it and how impressed I was that they actually pulled that off and made it so subtle. I missed it the first couple times i played it.

Usually writers go the other way with it and way overboard and make it hamfisted... and forced with some people in some cases.

I like 6's story more... but I think 4 was better written. If that makes sense. 4's story was probably better in every way... but 6... just something about it blew me away.

Possibly it's the branching storypoint. "Wait... I get to pick who i play as? Wait I get to play ALL the storylines!"

Yeah I'm only a little excited.  A prequel like that would be way more interesting.

@Kasz, I feel the same way about 6 and 4.  I think 4 would work really well as a book, and I think 6 would work really well as a movie.  6 has 3 great acts with great turning points that could work as 3 different movies in an amazing trilogy.  (I used to name all the characters after the actors who I thought could play them.)

Out of curiousity, do you remember any of the actors that you picked?

its nice a company can actually admit somethign like that

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

I only remember Jeremy Irons as Edgar, Johnny Depp as Locke, Gwyneth Paltrow as Celes, Björk as Terra (spoiler: she always seems half-alien anyway), Brad Pitt as Sabin, and Raul Julia as Cyan.  Yeah, this was a long time ago...

Casting all our favorite RPGs could be a funny thread.

Indeed it could. I especially like the Jeremy Irons suggestion. Björk would be... interesting
