What about the generation before that? And then the one before that? I quit with SNES

Wow, how does everyone get it so wrong? Im one of those that quit HEMMA's ago. I might see a game here or there I might like to try, like new Metal Gear games, new Ninja Gaiden games, new Zelda games. But honestly I played kick ass version of those games long ago and as the years wear on the newer versions are terrible watered down versions of the original. And unlike most I could give a rats ass how pretty they look, if there is no gameplay depth I'll be yawning inside of 20 min.

Case in point, Resident Evil 5= Trash

Why did everyone call RE 4 one of the best games ever made? Because it was new, truly different, innovative with great game play depth. RE 5 is ANOTHER shooter you can finish in an afternoon, *yawn* Its time we started making these developers feel the pain of half-assing a game like this over and over again. There have been at least 3 other 1st person shooters for Xbox with about 10 hours of play time

*New Ninja Gaiden's= Trash
Repetitive environments and enemies, *yawn* Close my eyes and hit buttons and ACTUALLY win fights, how does anyone call this trash good? It could only be because they've only played this generation of games that are totally full of more trash just like this.

Not to mention 1st person shooters are so tired, how many times can you play the same F-ing game renamed over and over again? They keep spoon feeding the masses the same games with WEAKER play mechanics requiring less skill so almost anyone with half a brain can beat them and feel accomplished, but people claim the Wii caters to non gamers?

Go play the older versions and you will find better games, older gamers like myself have higher standards, unlike the younger fools with little skill that need easier, prettier games to play so they feel secure about how good they are, where as actually good gamers can finish the game in and afternoon(No joke either) or less than a week. But the fools keep going back to buy another piece of trash. Everyone says Nintendo caters to non gamers, I say this whole generation caters to non gamers and the idiots that THINK they are gamers go buy the new systems and find plenty of cream puff games that have been all spiffed up for them to easily plow thru. The only thing people hate about the Wii is that it cant pull of the spiffy new graphics, who cares about how well the games play right? Jesus

I remember playing Final Fantasy II on the SNES and it took months to go thru that game, it was tough as hell. The main guy took me a month alone to finally randomly get a win and beat the game. Fast forward to me finally getting to play Final Fantasy VII, the game looks great, but the difficulty was a joke. I breeze thru the game less than a week, I finally get to the main guy, saving and getting ready for an ultimate throw down, thinking Im gonna die at least 20 times before I get to see all his multiple forms ect. 1st time I fight him, I totally screw up heals and attacks and I easily beat him. The only conclusion you can make, if the games are too hard, few people will be able to beat them, so few will like them if they are too tough, and therefore few will buy them. Make the games easier so they become more accessible to the masses and make more money. That is what has happened in this and even previous generations, FF VII was playstation one right?

Maybe the reason the Wii is so successful is because Nintendo realized gaming hasnt changed in 20 freaking years and again being ahead of the curve revolutionized the industry yet again with new controls. And with the innovation comes a whole entirely new experience, even from games you have already played many years ago and people like me are looking for something actually, genuinely new and different rather than more the same redressed with pretty graphics and dumbed down.

I dont own any curreny system but have friends with them and have played their systems. You could consider me one of those still on the fence about what system I might buy next, but its been about 8 years since I did. Am I Nintendo Wii lover? F#ck no, I am actually still skeptical about their controller, even after I played quite a few games on a Wii, I could just never trust wireless controllers, even rechargable batteries suck. But I am a gamer from a time when one system was all you needed, its time to trim the field of competitors, and those $500 systems should of course be the 1st to go. The market cant support 3 systems, there arent enough quality games to go around like that, and gamers like me question if there are any true quality games left at all

Emulators for the win!

Nice post. Good to see some reasonable people out there. I almost don't post on these boards anymore because of the general mentality I find here.

You must be joking?

How can I even post in this thread and not be trolling.

The OP needs a lesson in relativity, a harsh lesson in generalizations, and an even harsher lesson in nostalga.

I'll admit I didn't read all, or even most of the OP, but I read enough to know that it was basically an opinionated rant about how the games we play suck, and the ones he likes are better, and by absolute coincidence, also happen to have been released many, many years ago.

Grow accustomed to change, have an open mind, and you'll realize the games you like are more about your state of mind when you played them, and not their actual quality.

Obviously.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I am not joking. You are right about the generalizations though. While some genres might have changed for the better, I have a feeling that many more have changed for the worse or stagnated to a point that I feel I'm playing a game I have played before. This is an issue with some old time gamers. I also do agree that, generaly, old games have higher standards. I also do agree with his argument about what most posters consider non-gamers. As harsh as it may seem, I agree with what he said on this subject.

About saying that there are reasonable people out there it is because I find few people on this forum that break from the norm. While there are some great posters on this forum, they are not the norm in any way. The norm is for me to come to this forum and not feel like coming back because I don't even think I should post my opinion. Like it or not, this is the way I feel.

This post here, is the reason why I may not own a Wii but I think its one of the best things that happen to video games in a while. But not the same reason why the OP feels so, but the exact opposite.

The OP's elitism kind of thinking is what pushed people out of gaming in first place. If it isn't hard or long, drawn out, its not a true "game". Easy for a kid with all the time in the world to want that or someone who like self masochism. Not so when you are a husband, mother, parent, home owner, financial provider.

Its great that one wants a challenge for themselves for whatever reason, but don't forget that GAMES are suppose to be for fun also. Some people just don't have that when they have died for the 20th time because they don't understand the 10 button controller layout. Or the game will take over 30 hours to complete but they may only have 2 hours a week to play games.

I'm just saying...

Most people buy games seeking a challenge, I used to pay 40-50 dollars for a game that would last months. Now that has been reduced from a month or 2 to exactly one afternoon. You fail to understand how absurbly short they have cut games, and for people to not say something means they dont know better. That's the equivalent of taking a 2 hour movie and making it 5 minutes long. And the quality of the old games are off the chain, but they require a lot of practice, attention to detail and the ability to look beyond JUST the graphics to truly see it. So much time and emphasis are now put on graphics that gameplay is now secondary, this is the most serious failure of ALL current games.

Most people see a challenge as fun, if you want something easy, watch paint dry, do a crossword puzzle. Indeed what is the point if there is exactly no challenge at all? That wouldnt be considered a game if there was no challenge, that is the very essence of a game. If you arent seeking a challenge perhaps you shouldnt be playing games?  If the people making the games were truly doing their jobs, the games would have the complexity and depth but still be intuitive for all. That's what those great older games did that newer ones just dont spend the time to do anymore cause they are busy making them pretty enough for the new systems.

Im not blaming other players for the current problem with games, as much as Im blaming those developing the games.  Its the developers trying to appeal to non-gamers by making games really pretty, too easy and short so their turn over is more $$$ for less work. That's the BS.

I also fail to see how being short on time makes very bad, short games a good thing as I am exactly that myself, short on time.

Hmm, what strikes me most is that you mention that you can beat RE5 in an afternoon while you can do the same with every Resident Evil.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

some people are just stuck in the past and it looks like you are one of them. Wireless controllers are the best thing for video games, as I don't have to untangle a cord. I have plenty of rechargeable batteries to swap out if I ever need any, but I only swap batteries maybe once every 2 weeks. It takes me less time to manage batteries than it ever did to manage keeping the cords untangled.

All the games I own are of equal quality and fun as all the games I've owned on previous systems. Actually they are all probably higher quality, but whatever. They are just different. Rather than dieing 100 times because the game was punishingly difficult, but if I knew how to beat it I could finish in 40 minutes, games today only kill you a few times but take hours to beat. Heck, I can run through SMB3 in 20 minutes, and supposedly by today's standards that isn't even worth $5

Oh, and I can breeze through Final Fantasy II for SNES in a week no problem. I can also beat Zelda II with little difficulty (mostly the last palace gives me problems), but that doesn't make games like Mario Galaxy where I don't get game over screens every 5 minutes any less fun.

Oh, and you should look at the good Wii games. Pretty much every one I own will last you for at least 20 hours of game play and don't focus on graphics

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

WOw r u serious? This thread = trash. I grew up with the SNES and Sega and Ive played many great old games, but to say all games this gen (and last) are trash is opinionated garbage. Oh and btw, theres already a SnakeEyez here!! go away! :P
