Forums - Gaming - The ps3...has it lost any chance of it getting 2nd or 3rd place?

Leo-j,

If your giving up on Sony and going to not support them because they are in last place now. You are a tool. Play the games on the system of your choice.

Play for fun.

First denial, then comes acceptance.
Sony really needs to pull some miracles or they will have a hard time catching up.

I predicted this months ago!

Same could be said about the 360.

Also, ps2 sales are making Sony money, which in turn allows for ps3 price cuts. Turns out well for the consumers, no?

If you look at their financial reports, it's not nearly enough.

They're using other divisions to cover for the losses overall.  They're still doing better than MS and the Xbox/360.  They haven't made a profit from their Xbox division since it was formed almost 10 years ago.

Oh c'mon, Leo-J. There's still a good chance the ps3 could pull second. :D

We are 2 months away from finding out if this PS3 holiday season can make it come close to the 360.

Even though I think the ps3 will come in second, I don't think it will happen this holiday. :P

Though a $399 ps3 could change that, should the rumors prove true.

Well you can expect Microsoft to make price cuts aown there SKU's so really that's when the war really starts but with:

80GB $600 vs. Elite $450

60GB $500 vs. Premium or Pro $350

20GB $450 vs. Core $280

PS3 aint got a chance against the 360 right now. We see that Microsoft can make price cuts too.

AHAHAHAHAHA. The Core is a joke, don't try to pretend it's not. The 20GB PS3 may be weak but it's not crippled like a 360 w/no XBLA to speak of, nor demos, and $40 memory cards (last I heard), etc. (Of course, the nail is in the coffin of the old 20GB model. If a new lower SKU of PS3 even comes out, which I doubt, it'll have the cheapest mass-produced HDD there is -- which I think is no longer the 20GB size.)

Mind you, that still gives the 360 a $100-150 edge. (But no BLOO RAIE!)

I agree that the PS3 doesn't have a chance against the 360 right now ... after all, it's Halo time. Later on, we'll see.

Well considering Microsoft is considering making a Xbox 360 Arcade SKU. That would elimnate the Core and really give that line a good support. I remember there was a thread about it and it said they would consider putting a 512MB memory unit in the unit. So don't always count on the Core, Microsoft can make changes.

Price cuts only help if people want the system. In Japan, almost nobody wants a 360, and in the EU it isn't so popular either. It has been shown by surveys and other things that people DO want a ps3, sometimes even more than they want Wiis, and therefore price drops would do much more than they would for the 360.

Hell, I've heard from so many things like, "I want a ps3, but it's too expensive, so I'll wait for a pricedrop." This is from people who don't own a 360 yet. If price was all that matters, then they would've gone with that. There would be far more 360s sold than there are now. Hell, if a pricedrop to the still very expensive $500 can makes ps3 sales match the 360 for a time, how will it do when the ps3 costs $399 or even $299?

Like I said in a previous post, brand name is a powerful thing.

It is, why i can see it taking second in a LONG time, i also have quite a few friends who are going to get a 360 because of halo and Gears of War, alot of kids my age just love xbox live and the games on it.

THe same statement could be made to all consoles, but i do see it more for ps3 "its to expensive"

I always think that microsoft will drop the price as long as sony does, if we see a 399 ps3, we will most likely see elite being dropped to same price premium at 200-300 and core, well just low for that one.

Ps3 will in my mind most likely take over, in later dates, just because to me its a better console, and will most likely sell better in time. But in order to boost sales in the future, something has to be done, brand name will not push it to the point where they will take over so quickly

Agreed on all points.

Although, I don't think it will take TOO long for the ps3 to grab 2nd. I'm feeling late '09 at the earliest, but more likely sometime in 2010.

I think it will have surpassed the 360 by a healthy margin by the time the ps4 hits.

Well your giving up on the PS3 already. I thought the PS3 is suppose to cover for 2 generations. Why the PS4 all of a sudden

First off, did I eve mention a specific timeframe for when the ps4 would hit?  No.

Secondly, anybody who believes the ps3 is supposed to last two generations is an utter moron.  The whole "ten-year life cycle" bit is referrinf to the fact that Sony continues to make games for their consoles and sell hardware at least ten years after the console has launched.  They did this with the ps1, and they're doing this with the ps2.  It was a direct attack against MS who feels perfectly justified in abandoning their entire install base a mere 4 years after they launch their console.

What games did Xbox owners get besides Madden after November 2005?  Ps2 owners got FFXII and GoW2 after the ps3 launched, and games like Manhunt 2 are still on the way.

Can you think before typing seriously. You say the other division within the company is covering them. Well Microsoft is a software company remember. Does Windows ring a bell. They are the only reliable Operating system in computers today. Please don't start with money cause I will run down what Microsoft makes.

Who cares if they don't make profit. Microsoft is just laughing hard considering Sony is last and is losing money per unit every console that is sold. So Sony is in a hole this gen.

The difference is that MS has an enormously profitable software business. Sony's most profitable divisions barely make a fraction of what MS's most profitable divisions do. As a company, even with the Xbox losses, MS has over a 20% profit margin. Sony has about a 2-3% profit margin overall.

Sony will lose any war of attrition. Sony cannot compete that way.

And your point is? Look at what the 360 is doing and what its doing better than the original Xbox. Third-parties are on the console and its selling at a considerable rate. Lets see if there will be a PS4 in 5 years.

Actually i was thinking about those dates, exactly, but to me that is a long time O.O

i Guess its not to long, still a little after most likely the mid life of these consoles.

I dont know how much it will be ahead of 360, at that point, it comes down to what microsoft can produce

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B
