Forums - Microsoft - 3D: Why a new Xbox is coming sooner than later

I think people assume that a console manufacturer has to kill off their previous console when they release a new one, and I think we may have hit a point in time where console manufacturers try to have a longer transition period where both consoles co-exist.

I could be wrong but I expect Microsoft may try to produce a new console where they can release a game for the XBox 360 with "Low Detail" settings and it would have a resoultion of 720p @30fps, and it could be (easily) released for their next system at "High Detail" settings and would have a resolution of 1080p @60fps while playing on the same XBox live servers as XBox 360 players.

The reason for this is that third party publishers are going to be very reluctant to finance games at the budget required for HD games today on a system without an established userbase.

Now, I don't think that "Enhanced" XBox 360 games would be the peak of the system's abilities, but I wouldn't expect a lot of focus (from most developers) on pushing the system until it had been on the market for 18 to 24 months and had a userbase in excess of 20 Million users.

If for example they used a Blu Ray Drive, they could produce Xbox 360 discs with 3 layers. 2 DVD layers and 1 Blu Ray layer, hence the forward compatibility that they have been talking about. The Next box layer would hold up to 25GB which would be more than enough at least initially and people would have a very strong incentive to upgrade to the next generation Xbox as they would already have games which worked on it. Its like the transition from GB to GB colour.

I don't think they can fit Low Detail 720p and High Detail 1080p in a single disc

If Microsoft goes too early, it will have to battle economic uncertainty in much of the world as well as consumer backlash for releasing a new too soon.

I would think that 2011 will be the right time for a new release.

barring an unprecedented recovery of the WW economy, I seriously doubt anyone will be releasing a new console before the end of 2011, and it will probably be a lot later than that.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

360 would have been on the market for 5 years by then, that is the typical life cycle for consoles, so I don't see why people are saying that is too soon.

I don't think the people buying PS2s for $130 felt a huge upset towards Sony for releasing a new console, they aren't in the market for that kind of thing. The hardcore gamers who paid $350-$400 for the premium wouldn't exactly be upset, as they would have had their console for 5-6 years before they even think about upgrading anyway.

Tease.

If Microsoft and Epic decided to bring Gears of War 3 out as a strict 720 exclusive in 2010 for a $400 720, there would be at least 2 to 3 million people that felt that they would have to buy the new console.

And that is always what moves new consoles. Companies release their new game on their new console and people have to upgrade to the new console to play their game.

Examples of this happening are innumerable in the history of videogames.

These Speculations are getting retarded....I doubt MS is going to kill the 360 as it reaches the height of it's success..

Yeah, I didn't think Microsoft was going to kill off the original xbox at the height of its success in 2005 either.  And, did anyone tell you its not polite to start throwing around insults?

I think MS cuaght Wiff of the PS3 and made their move...I read an article with one of the guys at IBM that worked of Teh Cell...Acording to him when Microsoft found out about Teh Cell MS made thier move....And Even more shocking....He said the Xbox 360 recieved almost the same thing as the PS3 only difference was that MS told them what they wanted instead of just cloning the Sony Cell...I know I was schoked too..But don't call me a liar call out GameInformer

My point is this should explain why I feel the Xbox and the Xbox360 are being treated differently at MS...but just like all those articles about the NextBox i'm just speculating....though I'm not being retarded about it

Most console makers traditionally try to launch their consoles with a killer app, to encourage early adapters to buy the system.  According to some sources, the Halo series is loosing a bit of steam these days.   Do you see another series on the 360 that would be able to attract early adapters to the next MS console much as Halo 3 coming to the 360 was a big impetus for early adapters to pay thousands of dollars for the 360 during the Christmas holidays '05?  If there is one, what series is it and when should the next game in that series be scheduled for release if one looks at when the other games in the series were released?

Commenting on what would be a Killer App for the NextBox would make seem stupid since I'm trying to say that the 360 has alot of Life in left...

I don't know.  I haven't heard of one newly announced title from Microsoft that seems to have the same selling potential as Gears of War or Halo.

Besides Halo 3 ODST I have not heard anything...Alan Wake Is the only Hyped game from MIcrosoft Game Studios...That's why this E3 is such a nail bitter...

Tah-Daaaaah!  KILLER APP!!!

you know, I agree with the whole thing, but blu-ray? WOW
How do you all know that they will release eighth generation consoles??

yeah, microsoft will probably continue selling the xbox 360 because of its success, think we will have to wait until 2015
