Forums - Sony - PS3 already maxed out? Lair devloper thinks so!

Is way to early to think the new systems are max because there are always new tools being developed. I would think is obvious that different developers get different results from the same hardware so one saying it max it could just be that is all they could do but others might be able to do more. I am no expert of course but based on previous generations games have always gotten prettier.

some ones covering their ass for their weak ass coding.

I'm getting sick of a lot of PS3 fans ...

Factor 5 has produced some of the most technically impressive games available on the N64, some of the most technically impressive games of the previous generation, and has (currently) produced one of the most technically impressive games on the PS3 and you claim that the real reason they had problems was "weak ass coding" ...

The fact of the matter is that Factor 5 is on the short list of developers you'd expect to be able to take full advantage of the PS3; the two other western developers I'd put on that list would be id and Epic games.

The one thing I can personally say is that everyone I know who has wrote distributed code before, and is comfortable with the concepts, has said that you would have problems ever approaching theoritical performance on the PS3 because of load balancing, memory bandwith, and the Cell processors' approach to parallalism is not (necessarily) well suited to existing algorithms in real time graphics. So far EA, Factor 5, and Epic have had problems getting their PS3 projects running up to the performance they desire, whilst John Carmack (id) has questioned the approach that Sony has taken with the Cell and you claim the issues are only "Weak ass coding"

Who do you expect to produce this magical code to make the PS3 perform well?

Developers still havent figured out how to use all 6 SPEs at the same time properly; how the hell is it maxed out?

Idiots... it's really pathetic. Loser.

Sure they have talented coders, Turrican 1 & 2 were great games for the Amiga 500, but they never came close to maxing out the hardware. For example Thalion's LionHeart came much closer with regard to diskette based games.

Judging from videos and considering its huge scale environments all in 1080p (something Microsoft claimed to be impossible!), Lair is technically an impressive game for today's standards, nomatter if you actually like the gameplay or not, but future games are going to push the hardware a lot more.

BTW, the N64 would be maxed out a lot easier than the PS3 (even with the bold IMO that's still an understatement ).

Yes it won't be easy, but the design is far less bottlenecked than for example the XBox 360. More relevant is that developers have enough headroom on the PS3 for many years to come.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

You're assuming that the 6 SPEs can be used at the same time for an extended period of time though ... Many if not most (existing) algorithms that are used in game engines are not well suited to being split into 6 or 7 seperate parts, and even those that are run into load balancing and concurrency issues which are (very) difficult to resolve; even if you resolve those issues you still have the problem of getting data into and out of your CPU and into memory at a rapid rate to take advantage of the CPU which means you suddnly are bottlenecked by your memory bandwith and bus speeds.

The SPEs may never get used to a level to give the PS3 the performance you expect

The SPEs can be split into doing different tasks. 1 can do audio, 2 can do physics calculations, 1 can do dust particles, etc.

Considering that I have already played games for the PS3 that look far better than LAIR I can say that the developer is full of crap.

Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, and even Resistance runs a hell of a lot better than LAIR and in more than a few places looks better. I'm not saying that LAIR is a bad game at all (in fact, I actually enjoyed playing it during its rental time) but it is by no means the scale in which all things PS3 must be weighed.

Hell, Heavenly Sword alone pretty much spanks the hell out of LAIR in terms of using graphical and engine power. The first and last level alone have more going on in them than LAIR did in some of it's more hectic levels (except for the Maelstrom which was probably the one level that Factor 5 actually didn't do a half-ass job on) and Heavenly Sword runs like a damn fine-oiled machine.

Besides, we've all seen videos of games that look far better and use far more hardware power than LAIR did. FFXIII, MGS4, Unreal Tournament III, Killzone 2, and plenty of others. Gran Turismo HD and Gran Turismo 5 both look amazing (way better than the dirt color fest of LAIR) and GT5 just looks insane at times.

I don't think we've seen the full potential of the PS3 just yet. Heck, Even Epic was amazed at what they could do with the PS3 in their development of UT3. They claimed in their newest video that they have even pushed the engine far batter than it was with Gears of War and that they're still not done tinkering with the hardware.

In five or so years if there still isn't anything to brag about, and im sure you'll be hard-pressed to find something not brag worthy about the PS3 by then, then i'll be sure to come back and edit this comment just for you naysayers.

Until then, at least let the damn black box get past a 1 year anniversary before you throw the darn thing under the bus. I know that there are plenty of people out there just WISHING that the PS3 would fail (despite your claims statistically its still a strong system and well capable of overtaking its competition) and they've been wishing it ever since their beloved Dreamcast failed and their Big ole Xbox (not 360) was pretty much abandoned but I just dont see it happened. Statistically, graphically, economically, and otherwise......the PS3 isnt anywhere near its full potential.

Ask me how to turn a Rottweiler in to a Dodongo and I'll tell you the story of a lifetime.

So in other words, Lair developpers are idiots... :P Seriously, how far are they going to blame others on Lair's failure? Wanna bet on what they're going to blame next?
