No to Gran Turismo, Need for Speed did everything long before that on PC

What did Need for Speed do? I know it was released before Gran Turismo, but GT took the racing genre to a new level. It was the first racing game to be considered realistic.

Well GTA3 for 3d sandbox games is debatable for those that remember the classic gem Body Harvest on the N64.

Just my 2 pence on the subject as it came out earlier and ironed out the bugs int he system that allowed it to evolve into GTA series most remember.

edit: Regarding Halo for the FPS genre i believe that for all the good it did it still did a lot of harm with bots in multiplayer portions of the FPS games hardly ever being used since Halo:CE came out.... I want my PD bots back :(

people it isnt game that changed a genre or games that sold gang busters. its about games that once released many devs tried to copy it.

In other words after halo was released lots and lots of shooters came out after.

After gran turismo released lots of car games came out. and so on

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Where is Ocarina of Time? How could you leave it out...

What games did OoT spawn?

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't Zelda games the firts of open-world games?

Edit: Oh, 3D only? Well I change my question: which one went first GTA III or Zelda OoT?

still you haven't mentiod time scales or anything. For realistic driving simulators its Need for Speed before anything else.

For scifi future racing, give a shit about length of time before others copied it, its Fzero.

For shooters its Doom, Quake, Half Life, etc, where do you start your rules from then?

In terms of creating a "new" genre, this is the rule i am going by irrelevent of time gone by for a copy

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Oh your serious? OoT is ancient man and open-world was really coined by Zelda whatever by using an open world map. If were technical that was in the eighties.
