Forums - Gaming - Games that were so big, they spawned many more games for the genre

I'm only doing this for the 3D era of gaming.

EDIT: I shouldve made the title - GAMES THAT REVOLUTIONZED 3D GAMING

1. Mario 64 - The best platformer of all time. This game was all the rage when it first came out on N64 and set the bar for all other games to measure up to. Everyone was trying to make platform/adventure games after Mario64 came out. Rayman, Spyro, Ape Escape, Banjo Kazooie, etc.

2. Resident Evil -Pioneer of the survival horror genre. Remember when this game first came out? It was popular because it had graphics and horror elements that were previously unknown to gaming. While it wasnt the first popular game to use zombies (House of the Dead was), I'm sure titles like Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising wouldn't have been created if it werent for the massive popularity of Resident Evil. Rip offs: Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, D2, F.E.A.R, Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, etc.

3. Halo - Love it or hate it, FPS weren't considered "killer apps" on gaming consoles until Halo came out. The only FPS that even came close to Halo popularity before it was Golden Eye on N64. Now that Halo has become such a huge title, along with the addition of online gaming in recent generations, we've been seeing many more FPS titles coming to consoles and getting big marketing pushes...KillZone2, Resistance, BioShock, Mirrors Edge, Left 4 Dead...Say whatever you want. Those titles wouldn't have been nearly as popular if Halo hadn't come to consoles before them. Some of them might not even exist.

4. Grand Theft Auto 3 - We were all blown away by this game when we first played it. Nobody can deny the brilliance behind GTA3. It was revolutionary. Something we had never seen before. The completely open world concept and realism. The missions and crude nature (hookers, swearing, being an outlaw, etc) just added to the fun. GTA has gone on to be one of the best selling games of all time, and for good reason. Now we are seeing many knock offs (Saints Row, True Crime, Godfather) and people trying to use the same concept, but with a different twist (Infamous, Prototype, Crackdown)

(not in any specific order)

Around the Network

Wii Sports: Spawned an army of motion controlled knockoffs

Nintendogs: The reason why Petz, Catz, Babyz, etc. exist.

Brain Age: Go to your local games store and count how many Sodoku /learning coach/ language titles are on shelves

Mario Party: Crash Bash, Sonic Shuffle, Mario Party 2-8, etc......

I believe those are refered to as sequels. Mario Party hardly revolutionized gaming. Pure party games are not very popular these days anyways.

Also wouldnt put Wii Sports on there. That game didnt revolutionize gaming. The R & D team at Nintendo revolutionized gaming. WiiSports was basically a demo to show consumers and developers how the WiiMote is meant to be used.

Gran Turismo is one game that changed the industry.

I suppose I don't know what you classify as a "pure" party game, but Mario Party 8 (6.53m), M&S at the Olympics (4.21m), Carnival games (3.26m), Warioware (2.22m) and the various Rayman games (1.64m, 1.63m and 1.38m), just to name a few, beg to differ.

In your face, infamous!  *high fives Katilian*

LOL I guess I wouldnt even know if those are party games, considering I dont play Wii. Though I assume S&M Olympics isnt really a party game, and neither are those Rayman titles you listed.

Final Fantasy Tactics?  You can rotate that shit, it's 3D.

Gran Turismo.

You haven't seen Rayman in awhile. Though neither have the Rabbids.

It's quite obvious you haven't played them if you at least don't classify the Rayman titles as party games. Every game I've listed there is quite popular for social events and follow similar mechanics (i.e. minigames in which people verse each other linked to some overall scoring system). Given the broad scope you've used to classify survival horror (e.g. RE and FEAR 2 are extremely different games and I'd have classified FEAR 2 as an FPS with horror elements IMO), I fail to see how you can use a narrow scoped definition for party games.
