Forums - Sony - SCEE: PS3 To Be Dominant Within Five Years

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves says PlayStation 3 will be the dominant console on the market within five years.

"I don't think it will be next year, but in three to five years it will become dominant on the market," Reeves told GamesIndustry.biz.

"The legacy will be that people will see a tortoise and hare situation. In a way, in the end it will be a dead heat. People will say PS3 took a while to get going but it really caught up very quickly and confounded many of the critics from the first year," he added.

"When I see the line-up ahead, when I see what's lined up on the new product side, I'm very, very optimistic for what I see for PlayStation's future in the PAL territories."

Reeves officially retires his position at SCEE today. He will be replaced by Andrew House, currently chief marketing officer and group executive of Sony Corporation.

Sony has repeatedly stressed that it has a ten year plan for the PS3, but Ubisoft’s CEO said again this week that he’s expecting a new console generation to be in place “in the next few years.”

I was going to criticize then I realised this is the European arm where his forecast in theory could actually work. Had it been Sony as a worldwide entity then I'd have thought him hopelessly optimistic but in Europe the Ps3 will only get stronger as time goes by.

five years? errr... too late
