If the PSP Go rumors are true and there is no UMD drive, then this basically is a new unit, not an upgraded/enhanced one. Here are my thoughts on the matter. It's an upgrade, enhanced one, the DSi has different specs than the DS and DSL and will have some games that can only be played on it, yet we all still think it's still an upgrade. But every UMD game on the market now cannot be played on the PSP Go if it does not have a UMD drive. (Virtually) Every DS game on the market can be played on the DSi.
*Existing owners would have to upgrade their UMD entire collections as there would be no way to play them. Only if you want to get the new PSP and we don't know if there'll be some kind of trade in program. Good point.
*Game stores may decline to sell the units because they can't make money on game sales (especially the lucrative used game market). Highly doubt that, do you think Sony just came out and said okay guys this is our new PSP, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, what do you think? Plus they'll probably still sell vouchers in stores and I reckon there'll still be UMD releases for those that want that. Gamestop was threatening not to sell the PS3 if Sony locked games to a single console. If they only have a DD machine, I say they don't sell it. They stopped selling Zunes (for which Microsoft paid them royally) and sell no other devices that rely heavily/exclusively on DD.
* Sony may use this as a beta test for a digital-distribution predominantly/only PS4. (That cuts down on piracy and ties games to consoles/owners). HIGHLY unlikely, PS4 will probably be Blu Ray, and PS3 still hasn't been hacked. PSP Go is probably a bridge to DD only PSP2. Could be that too. Or PS4 could be halographic.
If Sony actually does this, I wonder if it will be more successful than the Zune?
I also wonder if all the software announcements made/expected are DD-only. And they got people on board by promising low distribution costs and "no" piracy.

Still hoping to find a good condition, reasonably priced 60G PS3 so I can get into the system with B/C.

Finally, a lot depends on whether Sony offers the DD only PSP Go as an alternative rather than a replacement for the PSP 3000. The E3 announcement should be interesting.

1) Yes that's an issue, and I see where you're coming from, but if the rumors are true, then Sony is prepping a big launch of the PSN Store full of PSP games, which will be playable on any PSP model. This is just an upgrade and a bridge to the PSP2 which will probably launch in 2011 or 2012 if I had to guess.
3) Best Buy, Targets and Walmart sell ipods and itunes and MP3 players, Sony has said they have high profit margins on PSPs, I wouldn't be surprised if stores get a small cut from each PSP sold. I agree that gamespot might not carry the new PSP Go, but have you seen their PSP section? 80% used games? I'm not sure Sony would mind.....
4) Doubt it, we are supposed to get 400GB BD by next year at the latest and 1TB discs by 2013, Sony is part of BDA and I sincerely doubt they'll make the same mistake of driving the cost of the machine up again with the choice for the optical disc, especially since it'll be unecessary since BD can theoretically offer the same capacity as a holographic disc. I'll be surprised if PS4 is not BD, IDK about SuperWii and Xbox 720 though.
Also I missed something in your original quote, I expect we'll get a software emulation solution for PS2 BC, especially since PS2 is slowly dying...finally, unfortunately.
