Forums - Sony - If the PSP Go Rumors are true ...

If the PSP Go rumors are true and there is no UMD drive, then this basically is a new unit, not an upgraded/enhanced one.  Here are my thoughts on the matter.

*Existing owners would have to upgrade their UMD entire collections as there would be no way to play them.

*Game stores may decline to sell the units because they can't make money on game sales (especially the lucrative used game market).

* Sony may use this as a beta test for a digital-distribution predominantly/only PS4. (That cuts down on piracy and ties games to consoles/owners).

If Sony actually does this, I wonder if it will be more successful than the Zune?

I also wonder if all the software announcements made/expected are DD-only. And they got people on board by promising low distribution costs and "no" piracy.

Still hoping to find a good condition, reasonably priced 60G PS3 so I can get into the system with B/C.

I'll wait till E3 and see what Sony says.

I don't see why people think this is a new console, it still appears to have the same architecture as the original PSP but just removes the UMD drive in way for digital downloads... Thus the console is another iteration of the PSP console, not a successor!

WTF is everybody's problem???, the PSP GO!! and PSP 3000 will be on the market together giving ppl a CHOICE!!!, like the DSI and DS, in the past BC PS3 or BC- less, the 360 Elite or arcade or pro, this happens all the time

What you are saying makes no damn sense what so ever,  if I buy a DSi or a non-BC PS3 or a 360 Elite, I can still play the current generation of games for each respective console.  If I get a PSP Go,  I cant play any game that is released on UMD.

Man..theres a trade off - If you get the DSI you loose GBA slot but gain a Camera, 2 touch screens, and specially made games, or you just keep the DS light and loose the new features. - you can get a expensive ass BC PS3 all the whole package, or you can get a cheaper model with no BC - you can get a PSP GO!! and get all the slick features but your doomed to DL only and loose your collection, or you can keep the 3000 and loose the new features and be as regular

No trade off,  if I buy a PSP Go  I lose the entire catalog of current PSP games.  Only the DSi is kinda like this because old DS Lite users cant play DSi specific games. But losing GBA slot on the DSi is identical to a non-BC PS3, and they can still play the entire current catalog of games for each console respectively

^ then if you feel that way... dont buy a PSP GO, or buy it and keep your 3000

It's an upgrade, enhanced one, the DSi has different specs than the DS and DSL and will have some games that can only be played on it, yet we all still think it's still an upgrade.

*Existing owners would have to upgrade their UMD entire collections as there would be no way to play them. Only if you want to get the new PSP and we don't know if there'll be some kind of trade in program.

*Game stores may decline to sell the units because they can't make money on game sales (especially the lucrative used game market). Highly doubt that, do you think Sony just came out and said okay guys this is our new PSP, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, what do you think? Plus they'll probably still sell vouchers in stores and I reckon there'll still be UMD releases for those that want that.

* Sony may use this as a beta test for a digital-distribution predominantly/only PS4. (That cuts down on piracy and ties games to consoles/owners). HIGHLY unlikely, PS4 will probably be Blu Ray, and PS3 still hasn't been hacked. PSP Go is probably a bridge to DD only PSP2.

@op: even if there is no UMD drive, they may sell an attachment to transfer umd games to a memory card. they could let umd-enabled psps do the same thing.
