Forums - Sony - Sony Ads

I was watching TV the other day and I saw ads for Heavenly Sword and Metroid Prime 3 back to back and as a result I noticed something about Sony’s marketing campaign which surprised me … There wasn’t a single in-game shot from the commercial at all.

This made me check Youtube and look at the Motorstorm commercial and (to my surprise) there wasn’t a single in-game shot of Motorstorm in the commercial; there were in engine-replays but nothing from the perspective of someone playing the game

Now, from what I can tell, it seems like Sony is continuing the trend of favouring FMV over in game footage as they have since the Playstation. This seems odd to me being that these games were good looking enough to sell the game with their in game footage, and (I suspect) people are getting used to being bait-and-switched from advertisements so this kind of commercial doesn’t have the impact that it once did …

How is it bait and switch, the footage form Motorstorm is exacly like the gameplay.

I think you are missing his point. What he is saying is that because of years of being shown FMV in Playstation and Playstation 2 game commercials, people are going to look at this and expect games to look much worse than the FMV they are showing us, even though PS3 games do look very good.

However, I don't agree with your premise Happy. I think the problem is simply that the commercials are confusing and are targeted at people who already know about the games, rather than those who haven't seen it before. I don't think the FMV has anything to do with it.

Whenever i see a wii ad i see old people jumping around then when i get home all i see is armless avatars :(

talk about the bait and switch

Well, Sony has always favored FMVs. It's a tradition I guess.

I remember the times when the PSOne was in hype, people told me things like "but you have seen it, the characters look like in Toy Story!" ... for them.

But anyway, I think many people are still being fooled by this kind of things. I know some.

I actually saw the Heavenly Sword commercial for the first time yesterday and noticed it too. The gameplay would have been a lot more impressive than what was actually shown.

I think you are missing his point.  What he is saying is that because of years of being shown CGI in Playstation and Playstation 2 game commercials, people are going to look at this and expect games to look much worse than the CGI they are showing us, even though PS3 games do look very good.

I wasn't (necessarily) claiming that the advertizements were bad but more that the ad campaigns seemed strange in particular when you contrast it to the Wii's ads; the Wii's ads tend to show off the games graphics because they're forced to in order to show off the gameplay.

I do agree though, if you didn't know what type of game Heavenly Sword was you wouldn't know from watching the commercial.

Well, I think the fact that the Wii commercials show gameplay at least makes perfect sense.  Although the games don't look great graphically, the entire premise of the Wii is to show new ways to play the games.  So, of course, they are always going to want to show people playing them in order to show them how the Wii makes it different than playing the game on any other system.

I know you weren't necessarily saying they were bad, but you were wondering if the fact that they use FMV affects sales.  I was saying that I don't think so, but the fact that the commercials themselves are pretty bad does affect sales.

Yeah , I do find Nintendo commercials to be much batter lately than Sony commercials ... maybe Il will buy a DS to ... no way I couldent say that ... orrrr ... could I ...
