Forums - Gaming - Civ Revolution now disappearing off shelves?

I picked it up for the 360 for $20 recently.  I lent it out to someone to try.  He liked it so much, he wanted to get his own copy.  Well, I look over shelves everywhere and it appears to be gone.  No one has it.  ONE copy showed up at a local Gamestop for $25 or so (which is now acquired by me and he gets the copy I bought).

Anyone else here notice if Civ Revolution is gone from your area?  I think it is about to hit Out of Print status.  The DS version seems to be still floating around though.

I only know the DS version, but I found it to be pretty damn good. I'm not prepared to call it better or worse than Civ IV, but it certainly is more streamlined. The game is fast and manageable, whereas the PC game tends to get bogged down with tedious micromanagement. Some people positively thrive on micromanagement, so you might not see that as a bad thing.

It's a tradeoff. There are things I miss from the PC version (upgradeable units), things I don't miss (land development), and some novel ideas unique to Revolution (exploration rewards and artifacts). A better game than either version probably lies somewhere between these two extremes.

As a portable version, I found Revolution to be great. If I were sitting at home, I'd probably just as soon have all the massive content of the Civ IV.

Depends on what you consider "'as good".  If a game that is rolled back to Civ 2, with even more streamlining, and handpicked elements from later versions (including the BOARDGAME version by Eagle Games) sounds interesting, then it is.  The game just flies.  It is tight and good in its own right.  I do like it.  The key is STREAMLINED though.

Hardcore fans set in their ways consider it an abomination.  I know those new to Civ, like a friend of mine, liked the game a LOT.  I also like it for something quick.

I will say, if you have a DS, and remotely like Civ, get the DS version to keep you busy.

Maybe the 360 version has a bit more.  I know in the 360 versionm, as units get experience, they can gain added abilities and be able to be upgraded by experience.  However, if you are referring to having old units go to a new era unit, then I can see that being a bit of an issue.  But, there are no upkeep costs, so it is less of an issue.  There is also a wonder that can be built that automatically does upgrading units to their modern era equivalent.

I think someone doing a Civ 4 mod with the new stuff in Civ Rev, would be very cool.

no i havent seen it around in my town.

but i live in a really small town.

I picked it up for 20 bucks, and I got a good bit of enjoyment out of it. I didn't have any trouble finding it, but this was a couple of weeks ago. That said, managing your cities was one of the most annoying things in that game. I played as the Mongols, and after capturing all the barbarian villages, I had like...10 cities. And I had to manage all of them, and the game wouldn't let me skip cities. And now I'm rambling, but really, that part of the game is so annoying. Plus, I'm stuck on 4 achievements which are all ridiculously hard (especially Technology Victory on Deity).

I would say Civ 3 is the best version of Civ. It has the best user made scenarios. I know a lot of scenario creators that refuse to move onto Civ4 from civfanatics website. I heard the DS and console version were decent and got pretty good reviews.  I am actually playing Civ 3 Age of Imperialism user made scenario right now made by El Justo on civfanatics.  It is pretty bad ass.  It is a shame they are taking the console version down in your area.

I wasn't clear. The DS version absolutely does have unit experience. But if you want to upgrade your extremely experienced cavalry unit into a tank, you can either build the right wonder or be German and advance to the right age. Both are one-offs. It's a little frustrating to have experienced, powerful units get left behind by the march of technology, but I guess it's part of the game's balance.

I'm pretty sure Leonardo's Workshop upgrades all your units, but I don't actually care since I produce most of my units in the Modern Era anyways.
