Depends on what you consider "'as good". If a game that is rolled back to Civ 2, with even more streamlining, and handpicked elements from later versions (including the BOARDGAME version by Eagle Games) sounds interesting, then it is. The game just flies. It is tight and good in its own right. I do like it. The key is STREAMLINED though.
Hardcore fans set in their ways consider it an abomination. I know those new to Civ, like a friend of mine, liked the game a LOT. I also like it for something quick.
I will say, if you have a DS, and remotely like Civ, get the DS version to keep you busy.
