Forums - Sony - Does Sony overuse their franchises?

How many new IP has Sony made this generation? How many has Nintendo / MS? I'm curious because I think there could be a correlation, more games being released = more chances of making new game for existing IP, considering Sony now has the the biggest number of studio of the 3 console maker...

Just this gen, Sony has created the following new IP at retail level:

* Uncharted
* Resistance
* Heavenly Sword
* Lair, Folklore
* Eye of Judgement
* Afrika
* Hot Shot Golf
* LittleBigPlanet
* Motorstorm
* Warhawk

Would anyone be able to supply me a list of new Nintendo / MS IP this gen?

Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports, Wii Music um... need help here guys, not a wii person...

MS I think is a given, they do not have enough in house studio to create sequals at a steady rate.

How come you lumped Lair and Folklore together???

I also think that Warhawk has been around for a while but I'm not sure.

I'd also like to add:

White Knight Chornicles
Patapon
LocoRoco
Gangs of London
Jeanne d'Arc

And a few that are already announced like

inFamous
MAG

You guys seem to be mixing up franchises with characters..

But to be honest why is this a bad thing? More games = better for us. I'd love it if Mario Galaxy 2 or a new Zelda came out this year so what's the problem? Also the Wii series can't really be counted as each game is completely different to each other. Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort can count.. That's over 2.5 years.. I don't see the issue with it though..

It seems a bit like a lose-lose, either you're making too little (Nintendo) or making too much, according to this thread Nintendo as well

lol no they almost make more new IP's they they do sequels. Nintendo, on the other hand, overuses franchises. Besides "Wii Whatever" has Nintendo made any new IP this gen? Serious question.

No, 1 game every 2 years is not overusing, its something we expect from a series we like.

As for the R&C games there 2 on PS3, with the second like an add-on adventure to the first.

Overusing/remaking/repackaging a series/characters is Nintendo's job

Well, my take, not really. I mean sure, we see plenty of Ratchets and now the finale of God of War is on it's way, but look at the amount of new IPs currently out, and in development. Sony has done an absolute great job at developing new IPs this gen, so their line-up isn't all overused.

For people jumping on Nintendo, even if you don't like these franchises: Wii Play, Wii Sports and Wii Fit are ALL new IPs and were ALL well received, let's remember that

actually none of those games have been critically well received. They sold well but are not considered critically acclaimed games at all. Their reception has been warm to mediocre at best.

I'm pretty he was talking about the consumer reception and not the reception of 30 year old manchildren.

I thought we were talking about the quality of said IP's? Afterall the discussion here seems to be that over exposure of franchises leads to reduced quality of said franchise games. CGI then used examples of new IP's that have been far less well received than most established franchise games and made a point of implying that Nintendo has been creating good quality new IP's. But the exact opposite is true, while they enjoy massive sales they have been critically panned by most reviewers as modiocre to low quality titiles.

Maybe I'm missing point, but what's the point of brining up Nintendo's new IP's if none of them are actually considered good?

some of them have been. although they have a couple which should see some more stuff and they are refusing to do it. honestly, its nothing compared to giving a last gen game new controls and selling it for 60 or 30.

So I hear everyone clamoring over God of War 3 coming out this year. Thats cool I guess...except its the 4th freaking GoW game in 5 years. But it seems sony likes to spam their successful franchises.

Ratchet and Clanks come out every year, sometimes twice

Patapon 2 is coming out...and Patapon is hardly a year old.

Jak and Daxter, Resistance, Wipeout, Motostorm, etc

They must have sequelitis or something.

Do you feel their franchises are overused? -DISCUSS-

1) Well, duh. There was a PS2 game in 2005, then in 2007 (like Gears of War), then a game on PSP (by a different developer), then one on PS3, three years after GoW2, and two years after Chains of Olympus (it's not releasing in 2009)

2) It's bad that Insomniac has enough dedication to make a Ratchet and Clank game every year? Besides, even that's an exaggeration.

One in 2002, one in 2003, one in 2004, one in 2005, a PSP one in 2007, a PS3 one in 2007, a downloadable game in 2008, and a PS3 game in 2009. How is that overusing, when Microsoft are releasing two Halo games on the same console in the same year, and that's not overusing?

3) Patapon 2: Two games in the series, hardly overusing...

4) Jak? 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009. Again, not even once a year.

5) Resistance has had a game every two years, like most game series.

6) WipEout: 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008. 9 games in 13 years.

7) MotorStorm? A game every two years.

No, their franchises are not overused. You can't overuse a franchise until the character appears in over 10 games every year (Mario, or even Sonic). One game a year is not overusing a franchise. It's not like Sony are desperately reliant on one franchise, they just release a lot of different games at the same time. Is Call of Duty overused? Is Deca Sports overused?

EDIT: And I don't get why you are spinning the fact that Sony makes several quality games in different genres and making it a bad thing...

a character is not a franchise though. Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers are different franchises although they both have Mario. If you have to count the two as one franchise, Super Smash Brother Brawl would be a franchise of Metal Geear Solid 4 since it has Snake in it and a Zelda franchise and a Kirby franchise and a Pokemon franchise and a Metroid franchise and even a Mother franchise.

@Dgc1808

how are Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Music in the same franchise?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Sorry I missed that xD

With regards to the other games, I was just counting the PS3 IP, though I admit I forgot WKC. I didn't include the coming soon list which would also include Heavy Rain that stupid pet monkey game and a couple of more that currently escape my mind.

I didn't see him mention SSB anywhere... But really now, isn't Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid the same franchise? I'd say they are, but by this logic it is not. Jak & Daxter is not the same franchise as Jak II and 3 either, since they changed the name, the 2 and 3 just indicates how many years it was since the original franchise. And then they made two new franchise out of that again with Jak X and Daxter.

@ Wii sports, fit, play and music: It's not the same franchise any longer? I remember people saying stuff like "By the end of the game the Wii Franchise will be the best selling franchise of all time!". It's only a franchise when it comes to sales then? It's the same franchise in the sense that they all use new innovation that could only have been possible on the Wii.
