Forums - Gaming - Nintendo: A Developer or console maker?

Derixs said:

I have thought about this for a while now. Nintendo makes some of the best games around. Why not just jump ship off making home consoles and just become a game developer. They will still sell their millions of copies but not have to worry about the hardware. This would also help them out since no 3rd parties really want to try and compete with Nintendo on their own console. What do you guys think?

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Not a good idea at all.  It's *because* Nintendo is an integrated hardware/software company that they have been successful.  It's about software first, and they tailored the hardware for that.

Nintendo is proof that you can survive developing your own games and creating great consoles. Besides if Nintendo drops out of the console race, who will take console gaming to the next level? Microsoft and Sony wont. They'll just up the graphics and call it a night.

@Derixs: Nintendo are not shooting themselves in the foot. They're making billions in profit and gaining tons of brand recognition in the process.

You have not yet given any good reason why Nintendo should get rid of hardware.

I think they could focous more on the games, but like the posts before if they build an know how the system works they can use it to the full potential. Dont get me wrong I love my Wii and DSi.

If you love your Wii and DS I don't see any reason why you'd want Nintendo to switch to another system, which won't have the same capabilities.

Nintendo focuses on games as much as they can and want to, it's not like the hardware designers would switch to game making if they stopped making hardware.

In the end, if your console is winning, who cares if you get 3rd party support.

This statement shows a lot of ignorance and is very depressing because it ignores the people who should matter most.

The ones who own the console care very much about the support it gets.

If money was tight over at Nintendo, you could always stop hardware R&D and instead focus on software, but since that has never really been the case, you are correct.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Wii Sports and Wii Fit would have never existed if Nintendo had decided to go third party after the Gamecube. That alone is tons of profit that they wouldn't have made. Combine this with the advantages of selling hardware mentionned by others, Nintendo would be pretty stupid to stop making hardware.

Signature goes here!

They make great profit off hardware. I don't see a decent reason for them to stop.

It's not just knowing "how the system works".  In the case of the Wii, they built hardware specifically to do motion control.  In order to support the games they wanted to make.  That can't happen when they don't build their own hardware.  You're really missing the point here.
