Haven't seen this posted anywhere.  Apologies if it has.

Blu-ray unlikely to replace DVD says Sony Pictures boss, still looking for next big thing

Blu-ray is unlikely to usurp DVD as Hollywood’s cash cow. So says Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, interviewed on forbes.com, Lynton says DVD has proved a gold mine for a variety of reasons, but he’s not yet clear what will replace it.

With the DVD format, he says the movie industry was ‘selling or renting a thing that people didn't consume. You go to Blockbuster, rent five movies and only watch two. That's a good business to be in. The potential problem with the Internet is that people are going to buy only what they watch and we are going to get paid only for what they watch. It may be a smaller window from a financial standpoint but it will be incremental to the windows we already have.’

When asked if he thinks Blu-ray can replace DVD, Lynton’s surprisingly skeptical: ‘The question is whether people will really replace their libraries. Plus it would appear there's already price erosion in Blu-ray, so we're not making the price point we originally hoped for. The entertainment industry at large has pretty much given away high definition to consumers. They haven't really charged a premium for it on television. That makes consumers more likely to buy Blu-ray but less likely to pay a premium for it.’

So what's next?
Ultimately though, Lynton remains optimistic about the home entertainment business. ‘What you see happening is that every time a new technology or means of distribution show up, about every decade or so, there's an enormous growth in the business because there's another way to exploit the library. We just went through one with DVD. Now we need the next one. I don't mean to sound Pollyannaish but there's always a next one.’

Ehh .. that's not exactly what he said, here's the original interview:

I absolutely agree with this. I only have a Blu-Ray player because I got one for $100 on black Friday. In the subsequent 4 months I've only bought 1 Blu-Ray Movie (The Dark Knight); I've rented all my other HD movies. The picture is great, no doubt, but NOT worth $10 more per movie, when I get like 50 HD channels on TV for $10/month.

Amazon.com allows for you to get Blu-ray movies quite a bit cheaper then at B&M retailers.

Yeah I think that's the problem it has to overcome.  HD is nice and all but only a small proportion of people feel it is worth the premium price.  Especially for older movies when you can get the DVD version for like $5 and then the premium becomes much more than $10 per movie.  With

I don't think he says that BR will not replace DVD from the consumer's perspective. What he says is that the movie companies do not see BR as the cash cow they expected it to be. They expected BR prices to be very high forever, but since the consumers' expectations changed from the HD channels pricing, BR is not valued as much as they would like (and comparable to DVD)

i.e. they are still looking for the new cash cow to milk moeny off the consumers.
