Forums - Nintendo - Madden NFL 10 on Wii will bring 'super deformed characters' - first video

but but but, most people who seriously play VG football games don't want artistic. They want to real life real football. Maybe EA should just port the Xbox version graphics.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

No, you can get a lot more unrealistic even for madden. And I didn't claim it was actually realistic, just not as much of a move away from realism as you think. It would have looked like the powerful pro series, for one thing. Or cell shaded.

True, cell shaded or powerful pro would be worse, but any moves away from realism in Madden are still just about equal terrible ideas for the franchise and make zero sense whatsoever.  And powerful pro probably started that way.  Madden was never intended to be viewed in that sense (and I hope that cell shaded or powerful pro styles are too far out there to ever be considered by EA in the series, but they may surprise us again next year).

Then why did all the calls for the series to have some change to stop going stale not include the qualifier "as long as the graphics don't change"? If those were so important, why did all the criticism leave that out?

Well, it was assumed that EA would never consider altering graphics for the worse in a new iteration of the franchise.  And I'm pretty sure that there are outcries by the fans to "change the graphics", but only in the sense that they should improve in broader steps each year rather than the trite updates that are standard in the annual updates.

I don't think we've seen enough footage to determing if it is for the worse. Don't give my any lines about it of course is, because it's reduced polygons or texturing. Art is not determined by arbitrary numbers.

Yeah, but realism is, and losing just textures alone is already a bad start.  We have seen enough footage, and that footage has shown that any sort of a realistic player model is completely gone - which simply doesn't work for a game like Madden.  You may like the new style if you think that Madden would be better if combined with arcade aspects, but if that is what you are looking for in Madden, you're probably looking in the wrong direction.

It's not just character models, but ball-trails and motion-trails don't mix well with Madden.  I don't know how to make the point any clearer - you can't combine realism and fantasy for a series like Madden and expect the game to play like Madden.  If EA has to resort to these sorts of updates to try to bring in a breath of fresh air, then they might as well just give up, because they have already proven that they don't work.

Madden is not realism. It's a simulation. Not the same thing.

While this may turn out decently, maybe 3rd party devs could just humour Wii owners into thinking they put the same sort of effort into Wii games that they do for HD games. It's almost sad at this point.

Yes, but it's a simulation of real life football.

Last year's did, so I'd be surprised if this year's didn't.
