Forums - Sony - What Would a 40 Gb SKU Look Like?

Use $ from the finencial unit sale to simply take the hit of a price drop.
Strip the PS3 like never before.

I would buy one if it had WiFi or Cat5... But if it doesn't then it is a non-starter for me as the cost to add WiFi would probably make it the same or more then the 80 Gb SKU.

Here is a link to that "mystery new SKU" which was recently tested for EMI:

Doesn't answer all questions, but there is at least a new model in the works.

PS forget this silly "40G HD" discussion. The harddisks for the next production run have long been ordered by Sony and they are certainly not going to change that order just because people think it would make the model cheaper (apart from the fact that a 40G disc probably costs more than an 80G hd...)

It would look like this!!!! No really I swear!! This isn't some fanboy delusion!!!

Sony's thinking:

They remove all of those features and sell it for $400 in the holiday season. Will it sell? Perhaps not to too many gamers, but it will definitely sell to people looking for a BR player. It would be the cheapest on the market, PS3 numbers are inflated because of the PS3 as BR player sales, and they discontinue the 40GB soon after the holidays, in preparation for the REAL GAMING $400 PS3.

Simple as that. Sony does not do horrible numbers in the holiday season.

UPDATE: Apparently the someone took a picture of the label for the test device...

It has WiFi on the label... Good news as far as I'm concerned.

Stop it, stop it, stop it.

The 40 GB model is a rumor from an MS exec who is laughing at all of you right now.

Kaz said in a video interview after E3 that they will only have 1 SKU from now on.

Why are you guys still perpetuating a rumor started by an MS exec and debunked by kaz himself?

This article leaves me to believe that there could be some truth in all this speculation:

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Viper you are wasting your time. Kaz stated their would be no price drop once the 60GB units are all sold and no one wants to believe him about that either.

Han Hai, also more commonly known as Foxxcon, is not a new supplier for Sony, they handle a lot of the PS2 lines.

This is just Sony shuting down an old PS2 line and converting it to PS3.  There is not price offsetting here, it's just diverting product lines from old product to new product.

Some sites take a crumb of news and bake a loaf of stinky bread with it.
