Strange, when I saw Sacred 2 I naturally assumed "the masses are dying for a game like this."

1.5 years? Are you kidding?! They are a SMALL studio. If you can hire a TON of people and don't really plan you game out well, you might be able to do it. 1.5 years only typically happen once assets and ground work have already been done via a recent previous release in the series.
German RPG makers are known for making huge worlds with loads of enemies, quests, NPCs, weapons and all that. Sacred 2 is full of content, player can spend months exploring it. They cant decrease the development time, because fans of such games expect them to be huge.
I own both Sacreds. The 2nd one sold 500k copies on PC which is solid, but looks like it costed a lot more to make. Anyway, they already were a bankrupt once so they'll be okay.
Iron Lore makers of Titan Quest also went bankrupt last year and they didn't make console versions. I don't think console version is the reason to blame, while some may think that this type of game is easy to make, I think they are quite complex when it come to balancing and loot mechanic.
In the current PC market if your company is not name Blizzard, you will be hardpress making games that can take forever to come out (ie have to polish and test) and not going bankrupt due to long dev. time. The piracy problem on PC is big thing for small dev with limited resource to overcome. I think for them to make consoles version is probably a move to hedge their bet and hoping to see some return in a more "lucrative" console market.
Anyway, I read that they are just trying to reorganize their debt and negotiate with another company for possible merger. So let hopt they come out of it.
Another problem is that, people want Diablo 3, not Sacred 2 or 3.
It's really difficult to compete against Blizzard.

Actually I would love to have new patrician or port royale. Too bad they chose to develope some action crap, which I am not interested in. :/
The sacred series is the most successful diablo like series around.
And it's very different from diablo so it's not a clone.
