I would like to add that a shorter story is not less likely to win. As loadedstatement said, if you can say something great in 50 words, that will be just as good.

Although I would be thoroughly impressed by a 50 word winning story :p

I found it very hard to keep the damn thing under 500 words, I finished mine at 900 and spend more time triming it down than writing the damn thing.

Man, I just can't win those things.
