Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo insists the iPhone isn't a competitor!

One of the worst things a successful company can do is underestimate and discount their competitors. Besides, think of the next generation of handhelds. The iPhone will have a huge userbase and will be selling a good amount of games, while the new Nintendo handheld will just be starting out. Even if the next Nintendo handheld holds its own, the iPhone is a threat whether people like it or not.

cellphone have a period of life of 2 year, mainly because the contract and u can choose other expensive phones.

thats for all phones not just the iphone.

the iphone have a smaller userbase than nokia sold n95. that still didn't make it a take off with their ngage platform.

apple won't either.

Sounds like a response ripped straight from Sony.

I agree with this right here!

(Don't let the Ninty fanboys here you)

FootballFan - "GT has never been bigger than Halo. Now do a comparison between the two attach ratios and watch GT get stomped by Halo. Reach will sell 5 million more than GT5. Quote me on it."

Nintendo could easily build something like this, have it work with the Wii, Include channels much like Apple's Aps. They could also incorporate the Wii Speak channel so that you could make calls between your DS and thw Wii.

The CHannel setup from the Wii would work perfectly for a phone, channels like weather, photo, shop, etc, also lend themsleves perfectly to a cell phone.

While open you could keep playing while talking on the phone using the Mic and speakers.

I would be willing to bet it could be built and sold for much less than an iphone goes for after Apple tax. Having an SD slot, the DS already has the capability of being an MP3 storage device as well. Something like this would eat a giant chunk out of the mobile market.

keep my portable gaming system seperate from phone please. maybe in 20 years when there are batteries that could handle something like that without having to charge your phone every few hours then

UPDATE:

It seems they might make phones their competitor after all...

by offering free talk!

PHONE CONFUSION AT NINTENDO

De-facto leader Miyamoto wants walk-about-town DSi, but Nintendo President Iwata says no monthly or costly bills. Skype says it's possible; this one's hard to call.

Nintendo has repeatedly denied and dissuaded the idea of edging in on the market of iPhone, iPod, cell phone, et al. But reliable chatter has led the videogame world to swirl with news of the DSi used as a mobile phone. The DSi media is not set up to directly compete with other markets, so far a download-and-go element prevails, an argument Nintendo has used to compel their competitors not to worry.

The talk of a DSi phone came as internet phone software Skype confirmed through TechRadar that their VoIP software could run on the DSi. The Skype Rep. said: "Whilst we can't comment on any future plans to bring Skype to Nintendo's DSi, it would technically be possible.

This follows Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto saying he was "interested in [a system with which] when you're walking in town with your DS, you can use various services." This opens the market to direct competition and might prove to skeptics that the DSi is ready to compete. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said phone use by contract is not something he intends for the DSi.

It doesn't seem Skype is Nintendo's answer, but that Nintendo is formulating their own. If the two Nintendo giants join together, we might have free mobile phone communication on the DSi.

iPhone charge lasts all day, not a few hours.

And the Nokia NGage was dead on arrival due to the lack of user accessibility and horrible design. Hidden card slot? Card distributed games? Requiring users to hold the phone on its edge while speaking?

The iPhone is already a huge success story by contrast.

Sometimes I wonder if people actually have any extensive experience with some of the things they want to have a valid opinion of.

Nintendo should stick to games, not attempt to break into PDAs or smartphones. They are a gaming company.

Considering that the DSi already costs $170, I really don't see how anyone could think it would be a good idea for them to develop a more expensive device with greater functionality that would also require a subscription carrier service.

Unless Nintendo wanted to market their phone for the Side Kick, young adult market, they really wouldn't have much of an audience in the typical hand held console demographic (younger children) for the same reason why the iPhone isn't taking away any of Nintendo's core portable gaming base.

It's a Nintendo fan pipe dream basically. If any other company was poised to release a smart phone, it's Microsoft, not Nintendo.

If Nintendo were smart and audacious enough they could hook up with Apple and release a huge line of games for the iPhone make a shitload of money and "confirm" that they are not competitors (because Nintendo only releases games on its own consoles or ones that aren't competeing with them)

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

lol ds phat

The iPhone and iTouch are NOT handheld gaming devices. They are a phone and a digital media player.

When Apple releases their iGame or whatever then they are considered competitors because its gonna be a handheld device. Officially in a gaming generation.

Until then they are in a different market that just so happen to offer video games. Its that fucking simple.

Those products arent official gaming devices theyre not official competitors.

ha yea and the same time the ap store for games starts going crazy and a shit ton of kids buy games for their iphone is the same month that parents all cancel their kids plans because their phone bill will be insanely high
