Forums - Gaming - Are any of you interested in the RPG Maker series?

For those that don't know, the RPG Maker series is a creation software series that began on the PS1 in 2000. Three years later, RPG Maker 2 released on the PS2, and in 2005, RPG Maker 3. I'm trying to create a game on RPG Maker 2. It's sort of a hobby of mine. I started out with RPG Maker 3, but found it too limiting. I then moved on to RPG Maker 2 because it allowed for more creativity (but at the expence of taking forever to do anything). I'm just curious to know if any of you still play this series.

i remember playing a similar game on my super nintendo, not sure tho. I think it was called the same thing. I tinkered around with it again, on a rom couple of years ago, but never it never drew me in.

You're really better off using the PC version of the series. I think the last version came out in February 2008. It's easier to navigate because of the mouse. The menu system is pretty good. You can write custom code and import code from others to create limitless types of RPGs and situations, plus, something the Playstation titles never offered, you can share your created games.

Plus you can rip sprites from emulated games to create new versions of existing RPGs.

The specs to use the software are freakishly low. Even if you can't run World of Warcraft, you can run this.

I own RPG Maker II and it takes wayyyyyyyy too long to do anything. I gave up after an hour.

Even if no one uses the software to create anything, does anyone download the games people have made with the software?

Well if no one used the software to create anything than nothing would have been created in the first place to download.

If what you meant to say is "Is it worth it to get merely to try out other people's games?" then that's a hard thing for me to say as I haven't tried anyones' yet to know if there's any quality out there.

Just my friend's though. I'm the beta-tester for his game. So far, he hasn't progressed that much since I heard that he was still making "Fate/Stay Night"-like sprites.

I tried it once on the PC. I made a simple RPG about an apple merchant fighting against a group of thieves...haven't touched the program since :P

RPG Maker was really fun for me until I hit the realization that at the end of the day, my imagination was severely limited. I was confined to the cliched sprites that came with the game, and what I could steal from sites. I wanted to make an RPG based off of the American Revolutionary War (I already had a bunch of things worked out), but I couldn't find the right sprites, weapons, monsters, etc.

I thought RPG Maker was awesome, but it was limited for me by content.
