The fact that as a first party Nintendo was able to publish so many is incredible.
Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. " thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Yeah, but the PS2 has been around for 9 years. Nintendo has been making games for around 25 years, and up until the Wii, they were the dominant publisher on all their platforms. Not to mention that publishing a game isn't the same as developing one.

What?
Okay - 2 things here.
Firstly:
The bolded is plain wrong.
SNES total shipped: 379M
Nintendo Published: 95-115M
That's less than 25%. Hardly dominant.
N64 total shipped: 225M
120-125M
55%. Dominant
GC shipped: 210M
Nintendo published: 75-90M
~ 40%. Not dominant (3rd party sold 50% more)
(I have no total data for handhelds)
Secondly.
Ps2 has 214 million sellers
Nintendo has published 229 million sellers. And that's with a lot of lacking data (more than with the Ps2, due to being older).
It's not that relevant, but still higher.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS
Just a note, there are more than 1000 million sellers, as a lot of games are missing sales data for possibly the US and Others.
However, this is still rather impressive overall.

Oyvoyvoyv: If you're going to make a post, make it so that I can quote it. I'm not going to quote something that long when it could easily be summed up in a paragraph or two. You have a bad habit of unnecessarily spacing out your posts.
That said, I wasn't talking about software sold in total. I was talking about million sellers. Nintendo has more than half of the million sellers for the NES, the most million sellers on the SNES (although not technically dominant), they were the dominant publisher on the N64, and they were dominant on the Gamecube as well.
It's possible that Nintendo has more million sellers than the PS2, but think about it. The PS2 million sellers encompass a wide range of games, both first and third party. Nintendo is limited by first party games, or only what they release. Even if we had complete data, I don't think Nintendo would have released enough high profile games to have enough million sellers to beat the PS2. Most Nintendo published games are notable enough that we have at least decent amounts of data on them, whereas there are dozens of undertracked and untracked PS2 games that are million sellers. Even if there are a bunch of missing Nintendo million sellers, I think I can safely say that there are more missing PS2 million sellers.
Let's talk about a thing, PC data is missing in this website, i believe pc sales for games should have at least 10 times more million seller than that is counted here, many that we know that made more than 1 million on pc aren't there like Diablo 1 and 2, doom 3, max payne, oblivion, bioshock, gta 3d, prince of persia games, infinity the sims expansion packs, ultima games, starcraft, Crysis and much, much more!!!
But for consoles i think the data are really reliable, for Japan since 90's and for west since 2005, so there should be much more million seller missing, and even considering the shovelware games that made 1 million sales through 7 seven years selling like 3 thousand per week.
| MontanaHatchet said: So, wait? Adjusted for undertracked games, the PS2 has more million sellers than Nintendo has ever published? I consider that impressive. |
PS2 - 7,000 games according to Sony - likely closer to 3,000 because I think Sony counted each territory separately.
Nintendo - Published ~645 across all home consoles and handhelds.
So PS2 = 214 out of ~3,000 titles.
Nintendo = 229 out of ~645 titles.

So, why does the total amount of games matter? Ratios mean nothing. How many non-notable games does Nintendo publish relative to how many non-notable PS2 games? There are thousands of PS2 games that were gone and forgotten. Games that didn't have widespread appeal, games based off of a subject with a small audience (cricket, for example), and games that were incredibly bad or had no marketing whatsoever. So while Nintendo has games like these too, they're not nearly as numerous as for the PS2.

It was simply a counter post to ensure context. Impressive the million seller PS2 count may be but the volume required to achieve it is easily 6 times as many titles.
Keep in mind those I counted included every title they've published which included stuff like the GB E-reader titles, the Famicom mini titles, Japan only re-releases, Virtual Boy, dozens of licensed arcade releases on GB, the whole BS Zelda series, N64 DD, 140 Japan only titles, etc....

The reason why i thought that only 1000 million sellers sounded so little is because we're talking about 2 decades of gaming, consoles and handhelds, all game genres, muliplatform versions are counted individually etc.
And I was thinking in my head, 'Tomb Raider... TR had like 5 or 6 sequels, and with multiplatform versions that franchise alone easily must have more than 10 million sellers, meaning that Tomb Raider alone is 1% of all million sellers in gaming' (nothing against Tomb Raider)?
I gotta go and check on TR how many million sellers it got.

I would very much doubt that 1000 is the correct number, and I would think that VGChartz has missed a lot of them. But if you think about it, 1000 in twenty years is 1 per week. More or less. It's not actually a small number, even if it seems like it.
But yes, it seems too little.
