1)Doom 3 (Xbox/PC)
Resident Evil 5 is a great game, but the one thing it’s not is scary. In fact the survival horror genre seems to have run out of steam a bit lately, with few new games offering any genuinely brown trouser moments. Which makes this list even more essential...
The first game to ever scare anyone in 3D, Doom is the granddaddy of first person shooters. It's most recent sequel borrows a lot from survival horror, although having all the monsters hide in Sci-Fi style cupboards – before jumping out and going "boo!" – does get a bit old before the end.
2)Clive Barker's Undying (PC)
It's a bit of a mystery as to why this game was such a flop, but maybe it was just because everyone was too much of a wuss to play it. A first person shooter where ammo is in as short supply as your nerve, it's the sound effects that get you - with more wailing and moaning than a family Christmas.
3)Aliens versus Predator (PC)
It's only its age that keeps this from charting higher, but the constant threat of getting an alien's inner jaw through your head, and the screech of the motion detector, still scares today. After the recent movies hopefully the new Aliens: Colonial Marines can make facehuggers scary again.
4)Condemned 2 (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3)
The thing about scary games is that they don't necessarily have to play that well to do their job. The Condemned games (sister series to F.E.A.R.) would be pretty ordinary action games if it wasn't for their ability to turn grown men into blubbering babies. Especially the bit with the bear.
5)Dead Space (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3/PC)
The new kid on the block of survival horror has it all: ugly monsters, not enough ammo and a genuine fear of what's around the next corner. You could argue it doesn't do much that's actually new, but only if you make a regular habit of chopping the limbs of necromoprhs with a laser torch.
