Forums - Gaming - OMFG, what is the big deal about RE5? Color me underwhelmed.

I borrowed RE5 from a friend and finally got around to playing it last night.  I pretty much like any game that lets me shoot something or somebody, but I'm finding RE5 to be a chore.  I've played all of the past installments, so I knew what to expect from the controls, but it had been several years since I last played a RE title.  I've played a lot of shooting/action games in the years since and aside from a shiny coat of paint, this game feels absolutely primitive by comparison.  I can't move and shoot.  Punches and kicks are context sensitive.  Etc.

I can go on and on here and I'm sure there are other people who feel the same.  The only reason IMO that this game got such high scores is because it was called Resident Evil.  If any other developer had put this same game out by any other name, it would have gotten completely trashed by critics for its terrible controls.  It's time that RE fans and the media let go of their nostalgia for past entries in the series and admit that this series needs to get with the times.  EA has proven that you can make a superb suvival horror/action game while moving and shooting at the same time.

I may return this game to my friend without ever finishing it.

I.. somewhat agree with you.

Luckily, your opinion about the game just counts as one out of a million potential people that will play the game. It's not because of you that Capcom will stop making games like these (thank god)! =P

My personal opinion about it? It's damn fun playing cooperatively, and alone.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

It's okay to think the game is fun, but yet admit the control scheme is antiquated.

i love the game but if it had modern day controls it would be the action game its trying so hard to be which i think would make the game better

Oh god. Is this Killzone 2 all over again? How about you get used to the way the game plays instead of trying to make it play like another one? This is like people saying Bionic Commando Rearmed sucks because it does not include a jump button! o_O

This is what I still don't understand today: This is the sequel to one of the best games of the last generation. What could they have potentially screwed up with this one? I mean, the mechanics still work, and that's why they don't need to change a working formula.

I'd play Gears of War, Uncharted or Dark Sector if I wanted to play a game that lets your character still have good aim while moving (which totally makes sense). ;)

Despite playing tons of FPS, I didn't have any complaints about Killzone's controls.  I love that game.  This is a different issue for me.  I'm just glad I borrowed RE5 and didn't drop $60 on a game that plays this badly.

Personally I like it a lot. I can agree about the controls though, they can be fucking annoying when you're in a tight spot surrounded by enemies.

Though noted, I think the general point the OP is making is about the timing. We live in a day where "revolutionary" games are released quite often with traits that make it very "2009". The step from RE3 to RE4 was HUGE and was very much accepted because of that, and the timing of it was perfect, in a generation that didn't really supercede it's brilliance. in this gen however, you can't help but feel how dated it is. The gaming world is moving along fast, RE5 just didn't (cept for the coat of paint), even though they would feel they are doing it to "stay true to the franchise".

Oh yea the inventory sucks balls too.
