I used to love jrpgs but now I'm not that intrested in them anymore. FFXIII and Versus XIII just doesn't get me that excited. I used to buy FF without even waiting for reviews, but after seeing the FFXIII demo I'll wait for the reviews before I buy it.

It's FF. no matter how much you hate it, I can promise you that the reviews will be AAA (>90%)

Good thing those FFs deserve all those scores and more!

And I'm shocked the difference isn't larger. How did WRPGs only get that much in a Western magazine in America?

Actually, JRPG's were the top RPG choice in the Americas by a mile last gen. Games like KOTOR were awesome, but were overshadowed by the landslide of great JRPG's. WRPG's are having the best of luck this gen.

WRPGs are selling like they have always sold.

JRPGs just haven't had a big hit yet.

Although I will bring a counter point to WRPGs doing well last gen. World of Warcraft.

I dunno, I've seen a slight increase. By next gen WPRG's might average way higher than ever before. RPG's that aren't WOW are suffering at the hands of casual titles and FPS games this gen. To say WOW did good isn't a counterpoint to what i've been saying. If you want my honest opinion, Sony made it really hard for JRPG fans to buy a PS3 and thats why JRPG sales are slow. JRPG fans are split between the PS3 and 360 now.

You said JRPGs were the top choice by a mile last gen. They weren't as the highest selling one isn't a JRPG.

Yes, but I also stated that WRPG's no matter how good they did were still overshadowed by the overabundance of great JRPG's last gen. KOTOR was just one example.

I prefer JRPG's, personally

4 ≈ One

Oh wow. People from the West said they prefer western RPG's to the Japanese ones. I never would have thought. That it's so close though is the real statement.

Um..dude...it's not as obvious as one would think. America has on average been right behind Japanese in JRPG purchases. JRPG's were also favored more in the past. Of course WOW would sell great on the PC, because PC gamers get games which are in all persons, but make it more personable. JRPG's are not games that are personable people today are finding that Americans love customization and open world.

I like them both equally, they just completely different genres like the OP said.

JRPG's are for more about watching the story, the development of characters, they mainly are linear without much choice, more like a movie in my opinion. But i've played great JRPG's this gen like TWEWY or lost odyssey, i think we just have to wait for more good ones to release (especially in PAL region)

WRPG's are like Dungeons and Dragons, you're the character, you usually have impact on the world around you, characters and the good ones tend to be non linear. Offering loads of choices and replayability, the enable you to create the story. And Fallout 3 is amazing at doing so, i should be able to play mass effect finally around summer when i get time.

In the past i prefered WRPG's but now i got older and i appreciate them equally.

WRPG's have benefited more from the technological jump this generation then JRPG's have. The power of new systems are more like facelifts for JRPG's, whereas with WRPG's, they seem to have more of an overhaul/advancement. (although Fable II didn't.)

I still prefer JRPG's though

Once I beat games like Fable, Mass Effect and Fallout 3, I'm pretty much done with them. However, I always go back to my JRPG's of choice.

ugh no.

JRPG >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>every other gender> WRPG.
IMO!

their storyline suck and too mixed up with FPS. seriously mass effect and fable 2 main selling point was there was sex scene.

i would care about any other gender RPG. it's blasphemy.

and the focus on open world, no character leave you with no one to remenber , empty ending. (fallout3)

Dude if you dislike modern WRPG's try some older ones: Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment , Baldurs Gate II, Kotor  for example. This are games that i hold higher than any FF title, try them out especially Torment it has absolutely incredible story.

Those games also have amazing memorable characters, villains, Npc's and Party Members.

They just work differently

JRPGs released this gen had either bad localizations(IU and SO4) or lack of advertising(ToV). WRPGs didn't have this problem.

Final Fantasy Tactics for the first Playstation......Ahhh the good old days...Then rereleased on psp with cinemas boy was it sweet....Wait what are you guys talking about? Oh yeah FFXIII on the Xbox360. I know right I'm so exited too!!!
