Besides FF I always prefer WRPGs. They are far better this gen than ever before.

Yes, most JRPG's (outside of FF's main franchise) tend to give off that feeling. I feel sick to my stomach when they tell me these people are 15 years old when they look like 23-25 year old male or female models.

what jrpgs have you been playing? they usually look as young if not younger than they're supposed to be IMO

The only young looking character i've actually played as was Tidus from the FFX series. Everyone else looked like they were in their early 20's. I'm not talking about chibi characters. The feeling that anime creators make older looking characters who actually are early to mid teens is not new. Have you ever seen the protagonist from Bleach?

Jrpgs have been few and far between and mostly unimpressive this gen. This is the reason. I still prefer them by a long shot though.

I like having full control of my characters these days, but I seem to be really stringent on what JRPG's I buy these days.

Agreed.

Not shocking at all, I myself have had mroe fun with WRPG compared to the JRPG which have released this generation. JRPG this gen have simply been poor, problem is this time it has taken several years into this gens cycle for a DQ and FF game to release.

That and the majority of JRPG are on handhelds, so many releasing in the future I am sure the interest for JRPG will be sparked again.

As much as I love JRPGs... WRPGs take the crown. If I had to list "greatest RPGs of all time", no JRPG would touch the list, and I've played a LOT of them (and a lot of WRPGs).

I know I'll get a lot of flack for it, but... JRPGs... are RPG-lite, and they're enjoyable for that reason, for many RPGers.  As a genre, JRPGs are effectively a mix of classic adventure gaming, with "real" RPGing (i.e. WRPGs).  I still love em, even if they are a little shallow.

In my opinion, JRPGs basically started out as simple WRPGs for consoles (e.g. FF1,2), and, probably due to lacking console power relative to PCs (where WRPGs really evolved), continued alond the straight and narrow path to what they are today -- glorified adventure games.  I know that sounds harsh, but its true.  I would even consider JRPGs to have evolved, over time, to be closer to adventure games, than (W)RPGs, if it weren't for the battle system aspect.

now... where's that flameproof rock for me to hide under?

I'd prefer Phantasy Star Online over any other RPG, probably because it's the only one I've played much of.

This is very true. If you want good JRPG's go on the PSP or the DS. I almost forgot about that.

Is that the yellow haired Cloud Strife wannabe ? What about him?

I used to love jrpgs but now I'm not that intrested in them anymore. FFXIII and Versus XIII just doesn't get me that excited. I used to buy FF without even waiting for reviews, but after seeing the FFXIII demo I'll wait for the reviews before I buy it.

It's FF. no matter how much you hate it, I can promise you that the reviews will be AAA (>90%)

Good thing those FFs deserve all those scores and more!

And I'm shocked the difference isn't larger. How did WRPGs only get that much in a Western magazine in America?
