Forums - Sales - PS3 To outsell Xbox 360 if theres a price cut?

http://www.badassgamerblog.com/2009/04/ps3-to-outsell-xbox-360-if-sony-does.html

The console costs a great deal more than it's competitors, came out a year later into the console market, and we are experiencing a staggering economic crunch, this still hasn't stopped the PS3 from selling very well, better than most would expect from a console that costs that much in comparison to a much cheaper competitor.

So, should Sony drop the price of the PS3 would it cause total PS3 sales to overtake the Xbox 360 in the long run? yes, here's why:

The PS3 is the only console to launch at a rather arrogant $600 price tag, that is still alive and kicking, it's a fact Sony's PlayStation brand commands respect, it's a brand thing and as far as gaming brands go, Nintendo and Sony are the foremost paramount, Microsoft hasn't achieved that level of brand awareness. yet.

Secondly, the PS3 is selling with a much cheaper console, what makes people still go out of their way to buy a PS3? when they could get another console that does the same things(plays games) for $200 less? The fact that the PS3 is selling this good, leads me to believe it would only improve with a cheaper price tag.

Online is FREE, not having to inquire further costs is a major reason for the PS3's "success", imagine paying for the console and still having to pay some sort of annual subscription for PSN...the thought of that makes me shiver. If Sony reduce the cost of the PS3 then we will see even greater numbers rush to buy it.

Another thing people forget is the PS3 is actually gaining more ground each passing day, Sony is selling more consoles each year than Microsoft is, although Microsoft's lead remains strong mainly due to their fantastic holiday sales. Notwithstanding I think that if Sony does a price slash for their PS3 system, their sales will go beyond what the Xbox 360 has achieved so far, people who want to buy it obviously aren't because of the price...people who want to buy Xbox 360's already have.

@kowenicki Oh, you highlight "Microsoft's lead remains strong mainly due to their fantastic holiday sales" as being wrong.

I thought they had a fantastic holiday sale, so sorry you don't see it that way.

And look at the fanboy comments below the article:

Cyborg Squirrel says: "Xbox you can't play Bluray, you have to pay $100 for wireless, and a failure rate of at least 33%"

ON1X says: "i agree with Cyborg
dont forget that the 360s scratch your disks..Pathethic i tell yall.
360 = Fail"

Lol at the red text.

My favorite part of this article is the "?" at the end of the title.

What was once thought to be certainty is now.. not so certain (...I know, I have a gift with words... )

And as Kowenicki mentioned, the 360 won't suddenly just stop selling.

The author stumbled unto one good point I wanted to point out, the majority of hardcore gamers own a 360, thats why the arcade is selling well compared to the other two sku's, its the casual gamers who are picking up the 360 nowadays. The PS2 crowds are buying 360's and not PS3's. Every casual player who will only own one console this generation and that purchases a 360 means one less sale for Sony.

NPD says Sony had better look into a price cut...when you are dropping YoY like they are, they need it.

I hope PS3 drops its price and then I'll buy one.

With a significant price cut it will push the PS3 price that much closer to the good blu-ray players' price which will definetely spur sales from the standpoint of the casual gamer looking for a blu-ray player. This is if you believe people are buying into blu-ray of course :p.

@kowenicki

Ok , I get your meaning. The 360 DID NOT have a fantastic holiday. If you insist, I'll believe you I guess.

@saimcheeda
I agree that the ps3 needs a price cut, but I think some of your reasons are flawed.

as far as brand recognition, I disagree quite a bit. In America, xbox is a much more apreciated brand than playstation. There is a reason why the xbox has such a large lead here and this is one of the big reasons.

as far as competing with their last gen console, yes, that might hurt sony, but it could have also helped them if they had stuck to their guns. Having people buy their last gen console would have helped them in the long run if they had kept their backwards compatibility. However, now when customer's go to buy a new console, they basically have to start from scratch no matter which one they choose so they loose quite a bit of loyalty here, but yes, it is hurting them in their ps3 sales having the ps2 out.

most consumers don't care about online starting out. They are mostly just concerned about price and games.

Kowenicki posted a nice little thread about this. Should pretty much disprove the last part of the your op.

as far as if sony's price cut could catapult them ahead of xbox, I think it's possible. It also depends on how microsoft responds. I think Sony needs to concentrate a lot more on the American and European markets too. They are losing in America bad and they need to do something about it. If microsoft stopped selling 360's right now it would take Sony over 2 years to catch up to them in America and the lead is only getting larger.
