If you compare the leading/second/third place consoles from last 2 gens(from the launches) you will see that: Wii has done: 3,2m better than ps2 in america 3,1m better in eu 1,5m worse in jap =4,8m better than last gen number 1 console overall 360 has done: 3,3m better than xbox in america 4,5m better in eu 500k better in jap =8,3m better than last gen number 2 console overall ps3 has done: 500k better than gc in america 6,5m better in eu 200k worse in jap =6,8m better than last gen number 3 console overall. Raw numbers wise second and third place consoles have done better than wii and percentage wise a lot better. :O |
Esa, this is your original question. The article I linked does show that the market has been expanded(or the same people from the last generation are rushing to get consoles earlier this generation). The extra ~10M(as of Nov) went somewhere, so the question is where? The comparison that you make, leading/second/third place consoles, doesn't do squat to show whether or not the Wii has expanded the market.
I'm not trying to make ninty look good or the ps2 look bad. As I've said several times, the PS2 did not have a worldwide launch is because they simply couldn't produce enough of them. They sold what they could in 125(127,177, whatever) weeks from the initial Japan launch regardless of having a staggered launch or not. The staggered launch did not hinder development cycles all that much, meaning western devs didn't have to wait for their respective launches to get to work on the first and second round of games. Also, after a year or two the sales of a console in a region have stabalized to the point that an earlier launch would have very little effect on the total userbase on that region. This is due to the simple fact that the people that wanted to purchase the console up to that point have had ample time to do so, and extra months at the beginning of the console's life would make no difference in that regard. Obviously adding more months to the end of period will give the console more software, possible price cut/bundling/etc. that would drive sales higher.
But whatever, do the comparisons by region. By making the three console comparisons you did, you are arguing that PS2 owners went to the Wii, XB to the 360, and GC to the PS3. That is the only way you can make the conclusion that you made, which is the Wii hasn't expanded the market the most. And as I said that's just as faulty as simply assuming PS2 owners went to PS3 and 360.
I have never stated that the Wii HAS done the most to expand the market, though I do believe that is the case. What I have been doing is showing the flaws in your arguement.
