Forums - Nintendo - Business Insider: GTA Chinatown Wars bellyflops (88,704 sold in US)

So its half VG's estimate. Take 2 better clarify this shit soon.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

well that sucks. with a bit of luck it will do well in the long term, it totally deserves good sales

anyway I think it's kinda weird to wait for GTA sales, 5 years into DS life cycle, to consider or not developing this kind of game

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

I was thinking something.... Did somebody remember some kind of controversy aroud this game? Every GTA has free publicity due Jack Thompson and Fox News ... but this one.....

Well, I bought it and I like it. It'll have legs, I'm sure.

One thing that worries me is that they said Chinatown Wars sales might influence the decision on future GTA for Wii.

GTA: Chinatown Wars Will Be Testbed for M-Rated Games On Wii And DS

Take Two says they will be doing "a lot of learning" when it hits in March.

By Kat Bailey, 12/18/2008

The Wii is better known for Carnival Games than it is for Manhunt 2. But things may change after Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. At least a little.

Stephen Totilo over at MTV Multiplayer writes that Take-Two sees Chinatown Wars as something of a testbed for mature games on the Wii and the Nintendo DS. And if it's successful, we may indeed be seeing a lot more like it.

"Frankly, even the M-rated content that we think is much more appropriate for the PS3 or 360, we have to look at the Wii as a viable platform across all our labels," said Take-Two CEO Ben Feder in a financial earnings call. "You just have to because you can't ignore the installed base. You just can't. We're going to do a lot of learning with GTA: Chinatown Wars on the DS in terms of bringing that kind of content to a Nintendo platform."

Take-Two has previously brought games like Bully: Scholarship Edition and Manhunt 2 to the Wii. But neither are quite as enticing (at least financially) as the prospect of a GTA designed specifically for the Wii, as Chinatown Wars was for the DS. So if you think stylus-driven drug dealing games are a good idea, go on and pick it up in March. You may be happy you did so later.

Do you believe Nintendo lost the "adultescents" demographics (and yes I'm saying adultescents not real adults) And if that ... what they can do to recover it.

You know i have to say that RE5 with 1.5 million certainly distracted core gamers, both from this and MW, not to mention the fact NOBODY cared about this game until the amazing reviews came in.

Pokemon didn't help matters either

I dunno, I'm in my thirties, and I bought the game day one. I'm out of touch with that demographic...

Some people on GAF claims that Resistence PSP did even worse than GTA CW

Why though?  The Wii doesn't need a GTA game.  The DS certainly didn't either.

I'm not a GTA fan at all, but I certainly expected Chinatown Wars to do better than it did.  Ninty fans hate GTA confirmed!
